I am often fascinated by game design evolution and how different genres and mechanics get fused in interesting ways. Much of the innovation here has taken place in board games, but there are also interesting evolutionary influences on videogames, where a videogame takes a board game idea and makes it something only possible in this medium. So today I would like to introduce you to a new videogame sub-genre—the roguelike deck builder. Now there aren't many entries in this genre, but I am sure this will change.  First, to explain deck building games. When you hear "deck building" the first thing you might think of is Magic: The Gathering or Hearthstone, but these are games for which you build decks, not "deck building games". Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time. Non-competitive roguelite-card game mash-up Dream Quest was my favourite game of 2014 – but that year I played it entirely on an iPad. The PC release came a year later and without fanfare. You don’t need to know anything about Kadath to dig Dream Quest . Alec’s favourite game of 2014 has been available on PC for some time, though it’s more familiar in its tablet guise, but it has finally landed on Steam . Normally, I wouldn’t be all that excited about a two year old game appearing in a new store but the previous PC version wasn’t all that easy to find . I’d forgotten it existed, truth be told. When Alec first told me about Dream Quest I looked it up on the Apple store and thought I must have found the wrong game. It looks like someone threw it together over their lunch break.
