- Game devs and players continue banding together to help the Australian bushfire crisis - 17 January 2020
Australia is still burning, but over the last couple of days they’ve actually had some rain ! While this is a big help to certain areas, there are still 83 fires blazing around the country, and there’s a lot of people and wildlife still in trouble. It’s good job then that there are even more game devs, companies, and communities banding together to help out our friends down under. A new Humble Bundle, a donation from the makers of Warframe , and a charity initiative run by Eve Online players are just three more ways the games industry is raising money, and you can get involved to show your support too. The bundle includes 29 games in total including Hacknet, Hacknet Labyrinths, The Stillness of the Wind, Think of the Children and Framed Collection. Join us in aiding the relief efforts by purchasing the bundle here for $25. 100% of the profits from the bundle will go towards WIRES, RSPCA Australia, and the World Wildlife Fund. Many of these games were developed in Australia and, as an Australian publisher, the current crisis is very close to home and to our hearts. Think of the Children is a local co-op game that has you taking on the numerous challenges of being a parent. You are not just the parent of one child—that would be too easy—but instead are in charge of multiple toddlers, all looking to get into mischief and only a few seconds away from environmental dangers. Your job is keeping them safe, an obvious main goal for a parent, but you also have to perform tasks at each location to score points. Things like setting up towels at the beach, socializing with friends at a party, and applying suntan lotion to granddad so he doesn't burn. A few tasks, such as tending to a barbecue, can be done over and over for more points as the timer ticks down. - Try and fail to keep your kids alive in this 'cooperative parenting simulator' - 16 October 2017
Think of the Children is a multiplayer comedy game about terrible parents. You and up to three friends play as parents who have quite reasonably been charged with child endangerment and neglect. To prove your competence and innocence, you have to make it through parenting trials with your kids intact, which is to say not on fire, poisoned, ravaged by seagulls, bludgeoned by kangaroos, electrocuted, run over or otherwise maimed.  It's a bit like a game of tag where all the parents are 'it' and chasing the kids around. Only instead of making it to base, the kids are hellbent on playing in traffic, kicking over top-heavy shelves, sampling laundry detergent, and quite possibly playing 'the floor is lava' with actual lava. Around Christmas 2015, former Senior Scottish Correspondent Cara Ellison and I got smashed and played Who’s Your Daddy while everyone else was at the office party. It’s a competitive multiplayer game recreating the battle of wits between a dad and a baby set upon causing itself grievous harm, a struggle to keep the little idiot alive as it scoffs batteries and chugs bleach. A good time for all. Right now, I’m looking at Think of the Children . It’s another parenting game, this one with cooperative multiplayer, about parents trying to keep kids safe everywhere from the beach to the zoo. - Watch the Grandma Gamer and I fail to save our children from drinking bleach - 5 September 2017
Grandma Gamer Shirley Curry was at PAX West this year, so we decided to meet up and test out our parenting skills on Think of the Children, a game about frantically keeping your wayward babies alive. As you can find out in the video, we didn’t do so well. If you’re unfamiliar with Shirley Curry, she’s the 81-year-old Skyrim YouTuber who has over 240 thousand subscribers. I wrote about her last year, touching on the good and bad of becoming a YouTube celebrity at 81. She was kind enough to let me steal her away at PAX West so that I could force her learn to play something other than Skyrim, and I think she did alright—better than me certainly.
