  • Gravity Garden development is cancelled - 11 July 2020

tl;dr Development on Gravity Garden is done. Players are not interested and I can't seem to craft anything fun from my prototypes. A great learning experience, but a failure as a game. Development of this farming idea goes back many years and includes more than one failed prototype. After my first game in Unity, Breeders, I was excited to try another simulation. I started work on another Breeders with plants and a wider ecosystem. The prototype was encouraging but I got bogged down quickly when I tried to gamify my ideas - especially the User Interface. My Unity skills were still raw, and my coding skills were still stuck in the 80's as usual. :) I decided to try something 'simple' - a small arcade game inspired my Lunar Lander mixed with a QWOPish control scheme. Crashed Lander turned out well and response to the game was good. Soon after I bought an Oculus Rift development kit, a DK1.…

  • Free demo while development is paused - 4 February 2020

Development of Gravity Garden is on hold while I deal with some family health issues. I want to use the time to gather more feedback about the current version of the game, so I made it into a free demo. Grab the demo, goof around in the Garden, then send me your feedback and suggestions. I'll use them when I can start diggin' in the virtual dirt again.

  • Devlog Alpha 12 - Menu Makeover and Eye Mods - 23 November 2019

Hello Gardeners. Alpha 12 is ready for planting. I'm working towards a player progression system. The first steps for this are in place with a new look and layout for the Menus. They look less throw together now and more consistent from tab to tab. There's also a new menu tab called Collections. This is where you'll be able to keep track of everything that you find and plant in your Garden. The first page is working now: Vision Mods. Like a camera filter they give you a new view on your world. Collect more Mods by eating new kinds of fruit. The other major change is more under-the-hood. I set-up Unity's Occlusion Culling system to help cut down on the objects being drawn. It's saving hundreds of thousands of polys from being drawn every frame - which means better performance. There will be more optimization in the future, but this is a good start. This is a top-down view of the Garden s…

  • DevLog - Alpha 11 - 4 November 2019

Hello gardeners. A new version of Gravity Garden is ready for planting. New Terrain System I liked the larger home island from the last alpha. Having that big chunk of land acts as an anchor to hold the space together - makes it feel like a Place rather than an empty void. I wasn't happy with the texturing on my large land mass though. The colors and style were awesome, but my workflow made for some mushy textures. With so much land I wanted crisper, more varied textures. I also wanted grass and weeds to add visual interest to all that open space. I found a couple of great solutions in the Unity Asset Store - MicroSplat and Vegetation Studio. Now the terrain has plenty of high-quality textures that blend together in interesting ways. Much higher-resolution land mass with hand-painted details to blend with the procedural ones. There are grasses swaying in the wind. There are 4 biomes wit…
