- My favourite Hitman game, which has over 10,000 'Very Positive' reviews on Steam, is now less than a buck - 13 December 2024
I think it’s fair to say that PC Gamer and Hitman: Blood Money have a long, storied relationship. Jim Rossignol once said that 'I never get tired of Hitman: Blood Money's inventiveness' , while Tom Francis described the assassination sim as 'one of the richest, most open-ended and enduringly satisfying games ever.' .. - One of the best PC games ever made is yours for $2 - 13 December 2023
The recent World of Assassination series has thrust Agent 47 and Hitman back into the mainstream again. After a short hiatus, and the perhaps-better-forgotten Hitman Absolution, the contract-killing clone is once again at the top of the stealth game mountain, right where he belongs. But despite its exotic locations, stylish violence, and slick sneaking systems, IO Interactive's reboot trilogy is not the series' highpoint. For that, you need to go back to 2006, and one of the greatest games ever made, available now for $2. Read the rest of the story... - The best classic Hitman game gets a makeover, but not on PC - 4 October 2023
Hitman Blood Money is probably the best of the classic Hitman games prior to its 2016 rebirth with the trilogy of games that would ultimately come to be known as Hitman: World of Assassination. For those of you who haven't revisited this iconic part of Agent 47's history, the classic stealth-action game is being given a new look courtesy of developer Feral Interactive in partnership with IO Interactive - but rather sadly we don't appear to be getting it on PC. - Windows 11 runs on phones, so phones now run Crysis - 8 July 2021
Windows is full of phone-based surprises, lately. For example, Windows 11 natively supports Android apps . It also turns out both Windows 10 and Windows 11 can be installed on phones with ARM and Snapdragon chipsets. And we're not talking about the old Windows Phone OS, either. This is proper, desktop Windows. That’s a route that eventually leads down a certain path. A question asked of all PCs since the mid-2000s, and now one we must ask of modern phones: “But can it run Crysis ?” The answer the OnePlus 6T cockily spits back is, “A bit.” Read more
- It's Hitman's 20th anniversary, so here are 20 facts about the silly stealth sim - 19 November 2020
Hitman: Codename 47 was released 20 years ago today. In all that time, IO Interactive have crafted an entertaining seven-game series (not including spin-offs), with the eighth aiming for the heart in January 2021 . The subject matter might be grim, but from the very first game, IO Interactive were always happy to fold information and easter eggs into their immersive sim (don’t @ me) to a ridiculous degree. The games all have murderdeathkills, but they also have hauntings, mythical creatures, and real-world actors as targets. I’ve had a blast digging up some forgotten facts and 47’s more bizarre moments (this does mean this list contains some spoilers, so beware). There are so many that this could have been 200 facts for 20 years, but I stuck with 20. It seemed right. Enjoy! (more…)
- The Joy Of shoving people in Hitman: Blood Money - 16 January 2019
The first time I pushed someone downstairs in Hitman: Blood Money , I felt faintly guilty. Not because I’d just killed a person, but because The Agency, my bar-coded assassin’s employers, had gone to the trouble of providing me with a wealth of lethal equipment. Yet here I was, sending people to their deaths without touching a single item. Was I putting someone out of a job? Five minutes later, my concerns had vanished, replaced by a sense of malevolent joy as I explored the lethal potential of Agent 47’s “shove” ability, a feature that’s strangely absent from subsequent Hitman games. - Hitman s humour evolved because of 47 s penchant for disguises - 23 November 2018
In the best possible way, the Hitman series is ridiculous. Its protagonist, Agent 47, is the single most conspicuous person in any crowd. He s big and bald and white with a bar code prominently tattooed to the back of his head, and not once does this fact deter him from his preferred method of infiltration: wearing a disguise. These aren t disguises in the elaborate, Mission: Impossible, we ll give you an entire fake head sense. No, 47 simply throws on the clothes of whatever guard or unfortunate bystander he s subdued. And this actually works. In the franchise s fiction, he s considered one of the most dangerous people in the entire world, the best of the best. This imposing figure who scarcely bothers to alter his body language, let alone his voice, is a master of disguise. Like its 2016 predecessor, Hitman 2 is quite aware that this concept is absolute nonsense. (more…)

- The most brutal melee takedowns in PC gaming - 18 August 2017
Games are very good at satisfying fantasy violence and elaborate, gory executions are commonplace. These animations are partly there to shock and illicit that wincing "oof" when you watch your character dismember some unfortunate guard, but they are also there to make your moments of victory in a combat encounter stand out from the rest of the melee. A satisfying, decisive takedown is a release valve that gives you a moment to regroup before the fight resumes. They are also useful for establishing character. Fight choreography can be used to say a lot about your avatar's mindset. Jackie in the Darkness 2 is sadistic, and worryingly inventive with his demon arms, as though he has spent far too much time thinking about how to use them. In Shadow of Mordor, Talion is quick and decisive with his deathblows—the technique of a warrior used to fighting many enemies at once. Agent 4…
- Hitman: Blood Money speedrun devolves into hilarity with the help of a magic coin - 14 January 2017
Hitman: Blood Money was, for a long time, a pinnacle of sandbox stealth games. Each level had a dizzying number of possibilities for assassinating your targets. For its time, the AI felt intimidatingly complex, and learning to navigate through all the layers of guards and NPCs and their various interactions was tense. So watching all of that fall to pieces as speedrunner ' Saintmillion ' beat the game in 36 minutes by exploiting the hell out of the AI is one of the highlights of the Awesome Games Done Quick speedrunning marathon happening this week. I'll never see Hitman: Blood Money the same way again. Adding insult to injury, Saintmillion demonstrated how utterly breakable Blood Money can be as a Silent Assassin on Professional, its hardest difficulty. The former means that he can't blow his cover, leave any witnesses, bodies, or equipment behind, can't be see…
- Revisiting the opera house in Hitman: Blood Money - 8 August 2016
NOW PLAYING In Now Playing articles PC Gamer writers talk about the game currently dominating their spare time. Today Lorna Reid goes to the opera in Hitman: Blood Money. Throwing myself down an opulent corridor in a hail of bullets, dressed as a painter, was not how I pictured my return to Hitman: Blood Money. As I stumble down a flight of stairs, still holding a bloody hammer, I m forced to concede that picking a lock in plain view of a guard wasn t a good idea. Nor was using the hammer in the undignified kerfuffle that followed. In light of the new game s release, and with its Paris Showstopper shredding me, I decided to return to arguably the Hitman series crowning glory. And I just had to pick the Paris Opera House, didn t I? Feet that had been so used to the layout of the grand building suddenly falter in the labyrinth of passages. Where the hell am I? Why is there inadequate sign…
- Hitman: The Joy Of Cocking Up - 10 March 2016
Any time a new Hitman game rolls around, I need to know the answer to one question: can I royally screw basically everything up and get away with it? Not for me the Silent Assassin, but more a series of pratfalls, murders performed inadvertently in plain sight, panicked costume changes and awkward scuffles, inevitably culminating in a desperate sprint to the exit with a chain of armed and extremely angry guards pursuing me. So I am delighted to discover that the new Hitman game supports this kind of rolling disaster. I even managed to complete a mission which began with me choking a man unconscious in front of roughly 200 people who I somehow hadn’t realised were watching me. …

- Hitman: Agent 47 is a bad movie about a bad hitman - 4 September 2015
The first couple minutes of Hitman: Agent 47 are pretty much a video game cutscene, with grainy video and voiceover talking about secret and bad human research. The segment s purpose is to explain, Hey, this is a video game movie, and it s about genetically modified hitmen, and you re just going to have to deal with that. It s cool if you re late to the movie, though, because they explain all this in the clearest terms possible again about halfway through. But who cares about the story? I watched Hitman: Agent 47 to judge whether or not Agent 47 is a good hitman. A good hitman, at least in the Hitman games, is one who succeeds at killing his targets with as few witnesses as possible, ideally without killing anyone but the targets. Sure, you can go nuts if you want, but stealth is encouraged, so that s the standard I m holding the movie version of Agent 47 to. With that in mind, I've gra…

- Improvisation, Experimentation And Dark Comedy: Hitman Is Coming Home - 10 August 2015
Absolution might be a fitting tag for what looks like a return to form and a casting off of the sins of the past, but since that subtitle’s already taken, I’m hoping I’ll be able to justify referring to this one as Hitman : Redemption . So far, the signs are good. I spent some time in the company of IO Interactive’s studio head, Hannes Seifert, as he played through a mission set at a Paris fashion show. As he manipulated NPCs behaviour and demonstrated some emergent possibilities, Seifert said all the right things about recovering the best of the series’ past. The game – this portion of it at least – backs him up convincingly. It’s looking good. …
- Agent $4.99: Mobile Spin-Off Hitman GO Now On PC, Kinda - 29 April 2015
We have Opinions about Absolution, the most recent Hitman game, ’round these parts. Opinions which not everybody shares, but everybody should because famously we’re always 100% Objectively Correct in all things. Despite some grasping at greatness, it seemed a disservice to Hitman as we knew it. Meanwhile, in Mobileland , whispers spread that there was, in fact, a pretty great latter-day Hitman. Its name was Hitman GO, it looked lovely , and it was a sort of stealth-themed sliding block puzzle which looked like a miniatures wargame. Though mechanically very different to any Hitman game, as I understand it Go nonethless conjures up a lot of their spirit – perhaps more so than 2012’s Absolution was. It was also acclaimed as something of an original. Sadly, it was banished to portables. Until now: suddenly, it’s on PC . There is, alas, a catch. …
