  • Override: Mech City Brawl is having a free weekend on Steam - 18 January 2019

Override: Mech City Brawl is a free to try this weekend, allowing you to team up with up friends or beat up other players in various cities all over the world. The trailer, above, shows off the gameplay you can expect as well as the surprisingly colourful and clean visuals. I say surprisingly because it is about mech duking it out—you'd have thought there would be more dents and rust or something. Still, the game looks like a lot of fun, especially if you opt to play with friends in co-op party , with each of you being responsible for a different part of the mech you're controlling. Only released last month, Override: Mech City Brawl has already earned 'Very Positive' reviews on Steam . Along with a singleplayer campaign, and the local and multiplayer co-op options, there seems to be a lot of fun to be had with this colourful mech fighter, so why not give it a…

  • Override: Mech City Brawl powers up and launches today - 4 December 2018

Giant stompy robots, even more giant kaiju, Tokyo getting trashed repeatedly and up to four players controlling a single mech Power Rangers style. Override: Mech City Brawl leans hard into its anime super-robot aesthetic, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Out today, it’s a mech fighting game by The Balance Inc for up to four players, solo or co-op, online or split-screen. While Sega’s Virtual-On and the PS2’s War Of The Monsters are good points of reference, I can’t think of any game quite like this. Take a look at the bombastic launch trailer as I try to explain it a bit. (more…)

  • Override: Mech City Brawl lets 4 players pilot a mech together - 30 November 2018

Even though their fights level cities, there’s something good and pure about gigantic robots battering the oil out of each other. Override: Mech City Brawl promises nothing but that, with 12 behemoths duking it out across cities all over the world and, from the looks of it, the moon. The mech-smashing will commence next week, and you can watch the launch trailer above.  Along with a single-player campaign, you’ll be able to smack around other players in multiplayer brawls, but it’s the party co-op that’s piqued my interest. Up to four players can team up to pilot one mech, with each responsible for a different part, just like Megazord or Voltron. If the TV shows and movies have taught us anything, however, it’s that learning how to pilot a mech with your mates is really tricky, and we won’t have the benefit of a training montage where we ca…

  • Override: Mech City Brawl faces down an alien invasion in a new trailer - 17 October 2018

Looking at the latest trailer for The Balance’s giant robo-biffer Override: Mech City Brawl , I’m officially jealous I wasn’t able to take it for a spin at EGX last month . Looking a bit like old PS2 gem War Of The Monsters, it’s a game about oversized cartoon robots knocking seven shades of steel out of each other, or sometimes alien invaders if you’re running solo. It all looks a little Pacific Rim meets Megas XLR, and that’s pretty much a match made in heaven, so far as I’m concerned. Below, a fresh peek at the game, its features and its big ugly space-monsters. (more…)

  • This upcoming mech fighting game features PvE and PvP - 9 October 2018

An ideal mecha fighting game ought to have a few key elements: jetpacks, power swords, an utter disregard for property damage, and enough chrome to blind casual observers. Override: Mech City Brawl checks all of those boxes, putting you behind the controls of one of 12 different fighting robots in 1v1, 2v2, or up to 4-player free-for-all throw-downs. There are also PvE singleplayer and co-op modes planned, but they weren’t available in the build I played. The stars of Override are its dozen robotic contenders, each sporting a very distinct style and silhouette, tons of personality, and a suite of unique special moves. I especially liked Shifu, a spindly, metallic kung fu master who kind of reminds me of Phong from the classic '90s CGI cartoon Reboot and dishes out lighting-quick strikes with far greater force than his slender chassis would suggest. There’s also Metage…

  • The bestest games of EGX - 25 September 2018

Matt: After four days of hosting panels, interviewing developers, streaming games on camera and poking at as many as we could on the show floor, Team RPS has returned from the hallowed halls of EGX. Now that we ve nestled back into our treehouse nooks, it s time to talk about the best things wot we saw. So, Katharine, Dave and Alice 3.0. Which game won the show? (more…)

  • EGX 2018 hits Birmingham next week try out these PC gems at the show - 13 September 2018

There’s just one week left until a borderline-biblical plague of developers descend upon Birmingham to showcase their up-and-coming games to all. This great gathering shall be known as EGX 2018 and starts on September 20th, running until the 23rd. There’s going to be hundreds of games on show there across all platforms, featuring developers of all shapes and sizes – both physically and business-wise. While I’ll be sadly missing out on the fun (someone’s got to man the news desk), here’s a few choice PC games that’ll be at the show, and everyone should be checking out. (more…)

  • Override: Mech City Brawl rocket-punches onto PC 2018 - 10 July 2018

Oversized, city-smashing fighting games represent an ironically small and underappreciated genre, so I was grinning the entire way through Override: Mech City Brawl’s debut trailer below. It’s an arcade-style, over-the-shoulder 3D fighter in the vein of War of the Monsters or perhaps Virtual On . Players go 1v1 or 2v2 and trample buildings, pick up oversized power-up weapons and generally knock seven enormous metal bells out of each other until there’s just one team standing. Override will be be flattening Tokyo this December. (more…)
