Video games have given us countless images of the past, some literal-minded, some more playful, from Total War's continent-sized thought experiments to the hinterland between myth, game design and archaeological record that is Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Among 2018's offerings are two that, to my mind, deserve special attention for the stark yet deceptive contrast they form: DigixArt and Aardman's melancholy Great War tale 11-11: Memories Retold, and DICE's characteristically seismic World War 2 shooter Battlefield 5. In many respects, the two could not be more unlike. One is a multiplayer-centric ensemble piece in which huge armies clash on a Greatest Hits of regional combat theatres, the other a gentle, affecting third-person outing in which you need never fire a single bullet. We're fast approaching remembrance day on the 11th of November - but this year, the commemorative events will be of particular significance. 2018 marks 100 years since the end of the First World War, and to honour the centenary, Aardman (along with DigixArt) has done something a little unusual. 11:11 Memories Retold releases today on PC, Xbox One and PS4, and tells the story of two men who venture to the front lines to fight in WWI. One is British, the other German, and both have entirely separate reasons for signing up. It's a war drama that wants to give a more human perspective on a historical event often remembered for its industrial levels of killing - and it's doing so with an incredibly striking art style. Bandai Namco will be releasing a special "charity DLC" for its forthcoming narrative-driven World War I adventure 11-11: Memories Retold. Proceeds from the DLC will go to War Child UK , which aims to "protect, educate and stand up for the rights of children caught up in war." 11-11: Memories Retold is a collaboration between Bandai Namco, Lost in Harmony developer DigixArt, and Wallace and Gromit creator Aardman Studios. It tells the interweaving tales of two men - Harry, a young Canadian photographer joining the Western Front (played by Elijah Wood) and Kurt, a German technician searching for his son (Sebastian Koch) - beginning on November 11th, 1916, and leading to Armistice Day two years later.
