- Investigate your neighbours in The Occupation devs' new mystery - 16 June 2021
After snooping around offices in The Occupation and memories in Ether One, developers White Paper Games will soon offer the opportunity to snoop around a neighbourhood . During E3 they announced Conway: Disappearance At Dahlia View , where we'll play a former detective in 1950s England who falls into spying on his neighbours after the disappearance of a young girl. The announcement trailer remind me a bit of Hitchcock's Rear Window, spying on people out his flat window. Have a look for yourself below. Read more
- Have You Played The Occupation? - 22 May 2020
Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time. Would that doing a games journalism was about sneaking around the offices of a big company, stealing people’s answerphone tapes and rifling through their private documents. Sadly it is not, but The Occupation is! (more…)

- The Occupation receives a major update including a Chapter Select feature - 4 July 2019
Since the launch of The Occupation on March 5th, the White Paper team has been hard at work listening to player feedback to improve the gameplay experience. On launch, The Occupation was praised for its innovation and gameplay however was hindered by the bugs which is something we wanted to work hard to improve for our player’s experience. With this major update, we’ve included a number of features and bug fixes in response to the feedback we received. New Chapter Select Feature We wanted to make sure we listened to the community and addressed all the issues. We then went to work after listening to the number one requested feature since launch - the ability to replay a chapter of the game. We’re proud to say, this feature now exists and is accessible after completing the game. A video of the update can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiFMP_Bz84c&feature=youtu.be The rest…

- Podcast: Our proudest gaming achievements - 7 March 2019
Life is hard and so are videogames. So when you do a tough thing, take pride. It doesn t matter if it seems like a small step for other people, if it s a big step for you, go ahead and puff your chest out. But do it quickly, for heaven s sake. We ve only got an hour. This is the RPS podcast, the Electronic Wireless Show , and we are being especially boastful this week. Warning: there is also talk of needles and eyeballs in this episode, but hey, at least that means it s not all self-care mumbo-jumbo. (more…)
- Wot I Think: The Occupation - 7 March 2019
Developer: White Paper Games Publisher: Humble Bundle Release: Out now On: Windows From: Steam , Humble , GOG For: 20, $30, 30 The Occupation is a game easily described as flawed but interesting , which I do agree with, but then you wouldn t appreciate it if a friend said the same thing about your homemade lasagne, would you? I didn t technically finish playing The Occupation, because in the final cutscene I didn t get the pivotal dialogue option. The characters, who I was supposed to be choosing sides between, just stared at me, unblinkingly, like two ideologically opposed owls. I wasn t even narked that it bugged out. Do I pick the right wing anti-immigration capitalist pigdog with bad glasses, or the left wing bleeding heart who is also a terrorist? Classic. Who can be bothered? Flaws, yes, flaws a-plenty. But up until I was forced into a mixture of industrial and regular espionage,…
- The Occupation sneaks into stores in search of a scoop - 5 March 2019
The Occupation is out now, White Paper Games’s investigative journo-thriller wrapped in the trappings of a sneaky immersive sim. Putting players in the shoes of an English journalist in 1987, a restrictive government bill that sounds remarkably like the American PATRIOT act is about to come into force. There’s only a few hours left, and the clock is ticking in real-time, but snooping around the right places might provide the evidence to derail the government’s plans. So far, responses to the game’s launch have been all over the place, but I can’t deny the launch trailer below looks rather striking. (more…)
- The Occupation review - a brilliant, if broken, British BioShock - 4 March 2019
If this review was nowt but swear words - and by that, I mean just an endless rant of disgusting words glued end-to-end ad infinitum - I still wouldn't be able to properly convey how much The Occupation frustrates me. Because the worst thing about this - the most egregious thing, the most toe-curlingly infuriating part of it - is that I love The Occupation. I love its premise and art style. I love its killer 80s soundtrack and novel real-time conceit. It truly has some of the finest voice-acting I've heard for a while. But it is also broken, glitchy, buggy, and nonsensical, and for every one thing that colours me impressed, another five makes me scream at the screen in frustration - usually when the game bugs out completely, taking an hour's worth of my progress with it. The premise of The Occupation is that you control the narrative. As the journalist Harvey Miller, you explore your en…
- The anatomy of a scoop in journo-thriller The Occupation - 22 February 2019
As a lifelong fan of immersive sims since before we had a name for the genre, I need to get my grubby mitts on The Occupation , an investigative thriller set in politically taut ’80s London. With a clock ticking in real-time and a conspiracy to be untraveled before a quiet and painfully legal government crackdown, there’s a lot to be done. With only days until it launches on March 5th, developers White Paper Games have released ten minutes of footage, showing us how a single lead can be followed in order to catch a conspirator in a lie. See how it works in the video below. (more…)
- First-person investigator The Occupation delayed into 2019 - 4 October 2018
I’ve been keen to get stuck into The Occupation next week, investigating an apparent terrorist attack in 1987 England by snooping and interviewing people across simulated real time, but alas I’ll have to wait. The Occupation had been due next Tuesday, October 9th, but developers White Paper Games today announced a short-notice delay pushing it all the way back to February 5th, 2019. They give the usual reason: they want more time to make it proper good, yeah? Which I’m certainly okay with. I’d rather play a better version of the game later than a so-so one now. (more…)
- Investigative thriller The Occupation breaks its story October 9th - 24 July 2018
First-person thriller The Occupation (from Ether One devs White Paper Games) looks like an exciting spin on the immersive sim genre. Playing as a journalist in 1987 England, there’s sneaking, talking and even a bit of Deus Ex-ish crawling through vents to be done in search of the truth behind a (presumed) terrorist bombing. Unlike most games, the entire story plays out over the course of four real-time hours. Either you get to the truth and make your choices by then, or the government will pass a restrictive new set of laws unopposed. Unveiled last year, the game now has a release date set – this October 9th. (more…)
