An "accolades trailer" is one that features gameplay and cinematics overlaid with glowing review scores and kind words from outlets such as ours—this one from the brilliant What Remains of Edith Finch is a fine example. Today, Square Enix released an accolades trailer for The Quiet Man , the live-action adventure/brawler about—as I understand it—a deaf guy who kicks ass in memory of his mom.    At this point you may be wondering how a game that Tyler described as " spectacularly bad " before he gave up in disgust could possibly be worthy of such a thing. The short answer is that it's not. The Quiet Man made a hell of an impression back in June with " the worst trailer at E3 ," and it more than lived up to that potential when it finally came out last week. Tyler, who played it so that you don't have to, described it as " a spectacular disaster ," not just a bad game but a full-scale catastrophic failure whose existence is even more remarkable when you consider that it comes from a major, reputable publisher.  But hey, maybe that's your thing, and if so, the new "Answered" update could be right up your alley. Actual deaf people have played The Quiet Man and found it very much wanting ; when you play it you clip into almost every surface available and during fights may suddenly teleport from one punching animation to another with a block of frames missing in between; the main character Dane isn t a Quiet Man at all and he actually makes a lot of noise. Yes, sure, all that is true. You ve seen everyone tear into it already, and say why you absolutely should not buy it until it s approx. 3. But I also want a go doing that. Human Head Studios interactive movie punch em up (complete with live action bits) is largely devoid of sound, to reflect the deafness of protagonist Dane. But a few days from now the game will be receiving a NG+ update that lets you play the main story again, but with sound this time. And it is my solemn plea that you never, ever do that. (more…)
- The Quiet Man is spectacularly bad - 1 November 2018
The Quiet Man, which released today, stars an Abercrombie & Fitch model—actually a bodyguard, I think—who seems to be obsessed with a woman who looks like his dead mom. I mean, maybe? The coupling of live action video and 3D combat is such a layer cake of clichés that I can't tell if it's meant to be a story or a promo for a stock video collection. Woman smiles. Men converse. It's a spectacular disaster, which feels like a rarity these days: there are lots of bad games, but for a game that was announced at E3 and made by a major publisher and studio to be this catastrophic is something. The FMV revival continues today with the launch of The Quiet Man , a brawler which is supposed to switch “seamlessly” between live-action video, in-game cutscenes, and playable fisticuffs. It’s not a game I’d expect Square Enix to publish, not a game I’d expect Human Head (the studio behind the 2006 Prey) to make, and not a game I’d expect Imogen Heap to sing the theme song for, but here we are. It seems a little odd to instantly undermine your game's central selling point. Nonetheless, that's exactly what's happening with Square Enix's new title. The Quiet Man, which is due to release on PC and PlayStation this November, centres on the journey of a deaf protagonist as he searches for a kidnapped "songstress" in a dark city. According to the game's Steam page , one of the key features of the game is that players can "experience the world in the way Dane does" - in other words, without sound. How strange it is, then, that the game is receiving a post-release update which will add sound and speech on a second playthrough. The optional mode, which was revealed in a recent Japanese live stream (via Gematsu ), is due to arrive one week after the game's release. Live-action video and third-person beat ’em up will combine in The Quiet Man on November 1st, publishers Square Enix announced today. Neither the brawling nor the movie look particularly great but I remain delighted by games reviving ye olde FMV ways, trying to combine two mighty different mediums in ways that mostly result in actors chewing scenery. I absolutely think games can combine the two in fascinating ways; I do not think The Quiet Man will be one of the games to do that. Here, come watch a big lump of it. (more…)

The Quiet Man , a new action-adventure game that blends live-action video with gameplay, will launch next month, publisher Square Enix has announced. Developed by Human Head Studios, the creators of the original Prey , the Quiet Man centres around the story of a young deaf man with a penchant for punching named Dane, as he searches for a kidnapped singer called Lala. The above trailer shows snippets from both the game and its live-action sequences. The live-action bits seem well shot and acted, at least, although the transition from that to the game sections is a pretty stark one. How the game will actually play isn’t clear from the trailer either, although apparently the combat system is choreographed by Tatsuro Koike, the same fellow who directed the fights in the Yakuza games. Square Enix introduced The Quiet Man with what may have been (and, in hindsight, I'm quite confident was) the worst trailer of E3 : A man enters an alley, kicks some ass, and leaves a bag on a guy's face. Why? We did not know. But now, thanks to a live reveal event that took place yesterday, we have a slightly better idea of what's going on.  (The gameplay, if you want to get straight to it, starts around 39:30.) It turns out that the quiet man beat up the alley men because the hot dog man told him to. There isn’t much to it, except that it features a pale deaf (and presumably mute) character with good back-alley brawling skills.
