Before coming to consoles & PC, Bury me, my love was a mobile game. Created by the studio The Pixel Hunt with the help of Arte/Figs, Bury me, my Love is a Text Messaging Adventure game using an interface close to Whatsapp, a mobile app used by migrants to communicate with their family when they leave. https://cdn.steampulse.org/steam/asset?u=https%3A%2F%2Fsteamcdn-a.akamaihd.net%2Fsteamcommunity%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fclans%2F34635421%2F8d30315e02b2f2e05e321a84812a9cecd6b774f7.jpg In Bury me, my love, we follow Nour, a Syrian migrant trying to find her way to Europe. Her husband Majd, who remains behind in Syria, communicates with Nour, advising her as best he can so that she reaches her destination safely. - Gang Beasts, Gonner and more going cheap in a Steam charity sale - 3 October 2019
A lineup of 41 lesser-known indie darlings, party favourites, curiosities and old favourites have gone on sale this week. “Sure, Nat,” you cry, “you say that, but games go on sale all the time. What’s the big deal?”. Well, dear reader, if you’d give me time to finish, I’d explain that this is a charity sale. For the rest of this week, the big-wigs over at the IGDA Foundation have set up nice little charity fundraising event. Until the end of the One Gamer Fund charity event , 50% of the proceeds from purchasing discounted games will be split between 7 particularly game-centric charities. It’s for a good cause, yeah, so why not take a look? (more…)
- Using the codes of text message apps to tell a story - 15 January 2019

It’s probably pretty difficult – or it might even be nightmare material for some. In less than a decade, smartphones have become an absolute central piece of our lives. They hold our most precious pictures, our beloved tunes, our bank info and other sensitive data… And more than anything else, they allow us to easily and permanently stay in touch with the ones we love. When it comes to that, text messages is the main tool – some people don’t even know what their phone’s ringtone is, as they always text and almost never call. That’s because texting is great. You may connect with someone who’s miles away and have the most intimate conversations whenever you feel like it, even if you’re in a crowded subway o…
- Wot I Think: Bury Me, My Love - 15 January 2019
Developer: The Pixel Hunt, ARTE France, FIGS Publisher: Playdius Release: Out now On: Windows From: Steam For: 4, $5, 5 “A game about Syrian refugees” has certain connotations, at least if you are not yourself a Syrian refugee. I expected sustained suffering, a maudlin and desperate tone, confusing cultural differences and a great deal of poetic misery. Which, well, probably says a few uncomfortable things about me, doesn’t it? Because Bury Me, My Love , which plays out as a quasi-real-time text message conversation documenting one Syrian’s dramatic attempt to reach safe harbour, isn’t defined by any of those things. It’s just as much (if not more) about shoes and emojis and jokes and irrepressible optimism in the face of rising darkness. (more…)
- Bury Me, My Love review - strength, spirit, and life as a Syrian refugee - 10 January 2019
When we are invited to punch reporter Khalisah al-Jilani in Mass Effect, BioWare's messaging is not subtle as a crimson renegade symbol flashes at the bottom of the screen. While undoubtedly a choice - and one entirely at our own discretion, at that - it's clear: this action will have detrimental consequences. Things are not so black and white in Bury Me, My Love. A text-based interactive novel - named after the Syrian farewell phrase that translates roughly into "take care, and don't even think about dying before I do" - Bury Me doesn't offer such polarising choices, which means - at least to begin with, anyway - it all feels a little bit arbitrary. I agree with my wife, Nour, and suggest she pick option A, not B, whilst preparing for her journey. I disagree later on, though, insisting she buys item C and not D from the market stall. Later still, I insist she follow fellow refugee E an…

It isn’t a documentary, nor is it biographical. Nour and Majd are fictional characters that don’t actually exist. But they are directly inspired by lots of real migrants whose experiences were similar to what happens in the game - roughly 90% of what may happen to Nour in-game is directly inspired by true anecdotes. One of our main writing guide and help was Dana. This young Syrian woman now lives in Germany, and when we contacted her to tell her about our game project, she agreed to be our editorial advisor. Her life experience, her advices and her script corrections have been super precious to us. They helped us reach our goal to write a story that would be as believable and true to reality as…
