- The 7 worst US Presidents in video games - 6 November 2020
One Off The List is our monthly list feature. Is there something you think doesn’t deserve to be on this list? Comment with your reasons why, and next month it may be struck off. You thought it was over. You believed the year of anguish would be a memory by now. I’m sorry, you were wrong. The carousel of disharmony will never cease, and neither will the bumper car motorcade of video games. This week, the United States of America chooses a President in a logistical process entirely in-keeping with the carnival metaphor I am here constructing. Even in video games – no strangers to ineffectual binary choice – there is a more varied selection of candidates. Here are 7 Presidents other than those offered on this week’s ballot. (more…)

- Metal Wolf Chaos XD puts the American President into a mech suit - 6 August 2019
I’ve just come across the most recent fact to have ruined my day, and I’m here to share it with you: Did you know that the year 2004 – a time which exists in my mind as a temporal island that I was just walking through about three minutes ago – actually took place 15 years ago? It’s true, because I was able to do these nightmare calculations in my mind while watching the retrospective trailer for the newly released Metal Wolf Chaos XD – an HD upgrade of FromSoftware’s 2004 cult classic in which the President of the United States is a mech pilot. Then, having glimpsed my reflection in the empty blackness of my monitor, I turned to dust. (more…)

- Metal Wolf Chaos XD review - as dazzlingly dumb as its legend suggests - 6 August 2019
Maybe there's some alternate timeline out there where FromSoft earned its global reputation well before Demon's Souls' hard-edged fantasy, where maybe its breakthrough game was another of its many cult classics. Maybe it's one where Metal Wolf Chaos' audience wasn't limited to original Xbox owners in Japan - all twelve of them - and found its way westwards, where its offbeat brand of absurdist humour and mech-fuelled destruction got the widespread recognition it deserved. Actually, maybe it's better that things worked out the way they did, because the circumstances behind Metal Wolf Chaos XD are perfect , a throwaway tweet from publisher Devolver during the fateful US election campaign of 2016 setting in motion this most unlikely of remasters. It can be hard slotting Metal Wolf Chaos into From Software's back catalogue, as diverse as that back catalogue may be - it's got mechs, but it l…
- From's remastered US-president-in-a-mech-suit shooter Metal Wolf Chaos out tomorrow - 5 August 2019
From Software's cult classic all-American shooter Metal Wolf Chaos, in which the US president dons a mech suit to save America from evil, returns in remastered form tomorrow, 6th August, on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Metal Wolf Chaos' exuberant third-person action first emerged in 2004. However, despite its choice of platform (Xbox) and star-spangled subject matter - players are cast as the power-armour-wearing 47th President of the United States, and must overthrow the traitorous vice president to regain control of the country - it never launched outside of Japan. Which was a shame, because you get to patriotically smack a lot of things in the face, blow a lot of things up, and revel in dialogue gems such as: Read more
- Metal Wolf Chaos XD throws down at the Fight House on August 6th - 3 July 2019
The headline does not lie – one of the boss fights in FromSoftware’s Metal Wolf Chaos XD is a mech battle against an armoured, armed and re-branded White House. Despite arguably being the most American game on the original Xbox, its tale of a power-armoured US President liberating the nation one state at a time has been Japanese-only until now. Ported to PC by General Arcade, the new ‘XD’ (cute) version lands on August 6th. As one of the few people to have actually played the original version, some thoughts (and a trailer) lurk below. - Metal Wolf Chaos XD will release in August - 3 July 2019
Update: Metal Wolf Chaos XD publisher Devolver Digital confirmed the release date today, after it popped up early on the Microsoft Store. It will indeed be launching on August 6. There's a new, brilliantly ridiculous trailer, too. Check it out above. Original story: Announced during Devolver Digital's 2018 E3 press conference, Metal Wolf Chaos XD is a bit of a dream come true: it's a HD reissue of a cult From Software game that never released outside of Japan. Originally released as an Xbox exclusive in 2004, if a new listing on the Microsoft Store is true, the reissue will hit on August 6. That listing could be wrong, but Devolver did announce on Sunday that release information for the reissue would arrive this week. Some have speculated that given the game's overblown take on US patriotism (it stars a president combating evil in a  mech), the game will release…
- Metal Wolf Chaos XD timing is 'interesting' because 'a lot of people are fascinated by the president' - 22 August 2018
At this year's E3, we learned Metal Wolf Chaos XD, a lost From Software classic from 2004, is getting a remaster . Released exclusively in Japan, the original stars Michael Wilson—a fictional US president whose office is in turmoil. From's Masanori Takeuchi says the world's fascination with Donald Trump's presidency makes the timing of the remake interesting.  "This whole project started with Devolver ," Takeuchi tells our Tom at Gamescom, via a translator. "Devolver tweeted at From out of the blue, no pre-context, they just said: 'Hey, would you like to collaborate on re-releasing this game?' The project did not start from From Software, but it is interesting timing because of the political climate. A lot of people are fascinated by the president, what he does every day—both positively and negatively." Tom follows up, naturally, by askin…
- How Metal Wolf Chaos is coming to PC after 14 years - 16 July 2018
By the end of the first quarter of the 21st century, freedom was dead in America. This is the opening line of Metal Wolf Chaos . But before the player can decide whether or not such a statement was prophetic back when this bullet-spraying action game came out 14 years ago, the 47th President of the United States, a man called Michael Wilson, erupts from the White House in a fully-armed battle mech, shouting: OK! Let s partyyyyy! The strangeness and humour of this half-forgotten game by Dark Souls creators From Software is clear from the start, and it raises two questions. How did we miss it? And how did it end up being remastered by Devolver more than a decade after it was made? (more…)
- The best games of E3 2018, from cyberpunks to twisters - 18 June 2018
During this year s E3, I saw the largest screen I d ever witnessed, folded around the corner of a building like a giant piece of glowing paper. It told me to buy Nike. LA is already the neon futuretown of California, never mind Night City . But I didn t just see ads for shoes at the LA convention centre, I saw a lot of games too. From the bustling streets of Cyberpunk 2077 to the twisting tornadoes of Just Cause 4 . From the crumbling Capitol of The Division 2 to the clumsy motorcycling of Trials Rising . Here are my highlights from the game industry s annual festival of bullets and colour, the sci-fi dystopia that was with us all along. (more…)
- Metal Wolf Chaos XD plops the US president back into a mech - 11 June 2018
I’d never heard of Metal Wolf Chaos before today, which was why I raised an eyebrow at the claim this press release makes about it being “From Software s legendary mech shooter” which was “previously released in 2004 as an Xbox exclusive only in Japan”. To pinch some words from RPS news boy Dominic Tarason, the story stars “an American president single-handedly thwarting a coup with his personal mech-suit”. It sounds like an odd curio, not the stuff of legend. I’ve since read around, and can now confirm that it’s definitely both. I can also confirm that a remastered version is on its way to PCs the world over, and there’s a trailer for it that made me say ‘whaa?’ out loud. (more…)
- Devolver's Metal Wolf Chaos XD is a remaster and out this year - 11 June 2018
From Software's 14-year-old mech game Metal Wolf Chaos - previously only available on Xbox in Japan (yes they do have them over there) - is being remastered for PC, PS4 and Xbox One this year. Metal Wolf Chaos XD - a collaboration between Devolver, From Software and General Arcade - will have updated visuals, refined gameplay, and 16:9 and 4K support. The Steam Metal Wolf Chaos XD pre-order page is live already and talks of a new save system too. Devolver had been heavily teasing something Metal Wolf Chaos for a few days. Metal Wolf Chaos is about as subtle as a fart in a church; it's a completely over-the-top third-person shooter where you play the 47th president of the United States trying to wrest the country back from your vice president by wearing a giant mech suit and blowing your enemies to smithereens.
