  The end of the bizarre and troubling year 2018 is close, and with it comes a time of reflection. I hope you’re enjoying the RPS Advent Calendar , but even that cannot hope to contain the bounty this year provided. When I joined Unknown Pleasures a year ago, I was a little fatigued with games. There were both too many to see and none that were grabbing me. This isn’t the critic speaking – I’d written only one article in a year – but the player. 2016-17 were by no means bad years for the PC, but despite all the industry drama (not to mention wider sociopolitical troubles) I think this is the best year we’ve had for PC games for absolutely ages. • The Joy of Floor Kids choreographed combos - 28 June 2018

  From Toe Twists to Charlie Hops, Helicopters and Coffee Grinders, there’s Air Chairs, Flares, Knee Spins, Jackhammers, Six Steps, Two Steps and Back Spins. No, that wasn’t an abstract poem, but a list of a handful of dance moves in the breakdancing rhythm game Floor Kids . There are over a hundred of these different moves, and through a combination of buttons and joystick directions the player can bust out their chosen moves on the dance floor, free-styling on their own or in a breakdance battle against a second player. • Floor kids puts a funky-fresh spin on the rhythm genre - 26 April 2018

  Much as I used to love playing them, it’s not a huge surprise that rhythm games never found too much footing outside of the arcade circuit. Increasing demands for specialized hardware and a focus on memorization of a set playlist means that they’re not the best of fits for home play, especially without a dance-pad or similar controller. Breakdancing-themed game Floor Kids is different, with a focus on freestyle competitive play and flow over rote memorization. (more…)
