- Developers of your favourite games share what they're most proud of making - 13 April 2020
Times are strange and frightening. But one point of great solace for me has been hearing people celebrating things in their lives. It feels especially important right now to hold on to what makes us all proud about what we do and who we are. And what I really love is people showing off things they’re proud of making. So I’ve been asking a bunch of developers to pick out something they’ve created that brings them pleasure to look back on. And here they are, including Harvey Smith remembering his input on Deus Ex and Dishonored, Derek Yu on one of his first-ever games. There’s pride in doing something for someone else’s game, in the power of details and in little inventions, and ah gosh, shut up, let’s just tuck into a big slice of escapist positivity. (more…)
- Wot I Think: Kine - 16 October 2019
Developer: Chump Squad Publisher: Chump Squad Release: October 17 On: Windows, Google Stadia From: Epic Store Price: 16/$20/ 20 Kine ! What a wonderfully opaque, wide-ranging word. It apparently means cattle or excellent in Hawaiian Pidgin English, but I’m guessing the nod here is to kinematics as in abstract, mechanical motion . That explains about half of Gwen Frey’s swish, challenging puzzler — her solo debut, after leaving Flame in the Flood developer The Molasses Flood and founding new studio Chump Squad. At its most elementary, it’s a game about rolling blocks around small, densely furnished grids towards an exit square. But it’s also, somehow, about jazz, blues, friendship, romance and hitting the Big Time, set in a glorious Hollywood twilight of purple and brass. Here’s Wot I Think. Those blocks? They are up-and-coming musicians with jaunty li…
- Gamescom's best of the rest: the coolest indies round up - 5 September 2019
This would not be RPS if I didn’t return from Gamescom and write minimally about the triple A-xtravaganzas and maximumly about smaller, weirder things wot I saw. So here, have at it: my favourite of the independently made games I saw at this year’s show. I flatter myself that the selection is broad enough that it covers genres to suit every taste. Strategy games! Card games! Building games! I haven’t picked all story driven adventure games or RPGs! That’s personal growth on my part, that’s what that is. Highlights include the one about loneliness, the one about loneliness, and the one about death. (more…)
- Every Google Stadia game announced so far - 19 August 2019
Google held another one of their Stadia Connect conferences today, and this one was meant to be all about what games you’ll be playing in the “ scary ” cloud come November. Sure enough, there were new Stadia games aplenty announced this evening, with the biggest addition being Cyberpunk 2077 . To help keep track of them all, here’s a list of every Google Stadia game confirmed so far, as well as which games are coming at launch, which ones will be arriving a little bit later, and which games you’ll only be able to play by subscribing to one of the special Stadia publisher subscriptions . - Screenshot Saturday Sundays: a grand greenhouse, rad robots, and a shocking smash - 12 May 2019
Screenshot Saturday! The best day of the Twitter week where I get to become very excited about upcoming games and then immediately have to temper myself because, oh, god, do you know how difficult it is to make video games. If none of these ever come out, or if they are entirely changed from what s presented here, I will completely understand. We re also a mere month from E3, which is once again reminding me (as if I ever forgot) about all my deeply complicated feelings about the nature of hype in the industry. But also! Look at these games! I want to play them! This week: a beautiful hand-drawn greenhouse, some UI design respect, and a destructive rampage gone a little wrong. (more…)

- Kine is a beautiful, musical puzzle game to watch out for - 26 September 2018
I like puzzle games because they expose how our brains process the world differently from one another. I love words, but am terrible at anagrams. When I look at a cloud of letters I can t process how they might fit together into a neat line again. Other people are the opposite, or are good at logic puzzles where you must conform to a specific set of rules. This is why different people find different bits of The Witness cheaty and impossible. The person who finds all sections of The Witness easy will one day be our supreme ruler. I m good at mazes. I m good at puzzles where you have to move something around a 3D space. I can just sort of see how they work. Kine is one of those puzzle games. It s a solo dev project by Gwen Frey, and I played it at EGX and I want to play it again immediately. Kine is about little machines that are sort of like instruments (a piano, an accordion, a drum kit…
- Watch the fantastic trailer for musical puzzle game Kine - 3 April 2018
Kine is an upcoming 3D puzzle game about three robot musicians looking for their big break. Its announcement trailer is chock-full of jazz, graphic novel-like art, and cleverly synchronized movement, putting it right up my alley.  "Do you like music, or challenge, or quirky yellow robots?" solo developer Gwen Frey asks on Kine's Steam page . "If you answered yes to any of the above questions then this game is for you! If you answered no to all of the questions above then this game might not be for you. Also, you might not have a pulse. Please check your pulse."  Kine is about manipulating each robot's instrumental appendages to traverse levels. In a tweet , Frey said it works on an undo and redo system that lets you rewind any moves you make, a handy way to retrace your steps. It's also how she made Kine's delightful trailer—simply redoing moves in t…
- Pretty puzzler Kine is announced - 24 March 2018
Kine is one of those titles that annoys me the moment I hear about it, because I deserve to be playing it right now but some team of artists is working really hard on it so they won’t just give it to me. Give it to me, you crazy kids. I have been a good boy all year and I am delighted by what you have made. Please let me have it. Please. (more…)
