- Server-side update in favor of AWS support - 9 March 2026
First update in over 8 years... =) I moved the back-end from a traditional web hosting solution in favor of AWS. This should make the game more stable, reliable, and cheaper in the long-term. Expect many more years of support for Firmament Wars. Maybe I should market this game? It's actually more fun than I remember =D
- Myst developer Kickstarting new steampunk VR puzzle adventure Firmament - 26 March 2019
Cyan Worlds, the developer behind seminal puzzle adventure Myst, has launched a Kickstarter to fund development of its new VR game Firmament. Those with decently honed memory skills might recall that Firmament was initially unveiled in March last year, whereupon it was referred to as a "new steampunk adventure". That early reveal was accompanied by a surprisingly lengthy "teaser" trailer, suggesting that development was reasonably well underway. Twelve months on, and Firmament has re-emerged on Kickstarter for a bout of crowdfunding, with an estimated release of July 2020 - assuming it meets its goal. And while there's not a huge amount of new information to be gleaned beyond what was teased last year, Cyan has clarified a few points and shared some snippets of new gameplay footage to woo potential backers. - Patch 1.0.6 - Minor bug fixes - 12 November 2018
Just another round of improvements: Computer cannon statistics now register correctly on the game's final stat screen. The final stat screen now properly displays the computer's difficulty. The game's targeting system will no longer attempt to automatically target a valid tile, but will instead display an error message. This was originally implemented to help the player, but it proved to be too disorienting.

• The AI now uses cannons as intended. • Fixed the "cannot join the game" bug. • Fixed a bug that caused an unintended "not adjacent" error message that had extra information in it. • Fixed a bug that caused your government selection to not save properly. • Game names can now have a space in them. • The Lithuanian flag now displays properly on the leaderboard.

This will help them appear more aligned with human players. • Fixed a tile in central China that was not properly linked to its neighbor. • AI players will now use their cannons attacks as intended.

- Patch 0.3.1 Is Finally Here! - 30 August 2018
The mega update is finally here! Firmament Wars has been upgraded with a highly optimized caching system to store game data. Expect gameplay to feel much smoother and faster than ever! Along with the redesign are some updates as well: • Literally everything should feel faster and the game should scale better in terms of supporting more concurrent players. This is where the bulk of the work went in this patch! A big deal if you decided to tell all of your friends about how cool Firmament Wars is... • Friends lists are now stored locally on your computer. Your old friend list is gone. Sorry! It was for the best. Trust me. • Fixed a bug in team games with AI opponents that sometimes caused games to end prematurely. • Removed the GET troop bonuses from the game for reasons.
- Upgrading to version 0.3 - Outage Taking Longer Than Expected - 26 August 2018
Apologies for the extended outage. We'll be right back when everything is working as expected! The latest update came with some unexpected behavior.
- Full Release Pushed to Late August to Finish Netcode Optimization - 8 August 2018
Thanks to all of the helpful feedback from players, we found several important improvements to work on! For the time being, we are finished adding maps. Since the start of Early Access on June 23rd, we have added five new maps and improved one map. We hoped to release today, however the netcode optimizations are taking longer than expected, so we will mark Firmament Wars as "full release" as soon as those changes are completed. We hope that is no later than the end of August. The lobby and title screen have already been full refactored, but we are still finishing up refactoring the netcode for the game mode itself. Our goal is that the game will be able to support hundreds, perhaps thousands, of concurrent players once the changes are finished.

Patch 0.2.5 has changed the following: • A new 6-player map in China! They say never fight a land war in Asia, but we'll make an exception for this 126-tile behemoth! • Adjustments and optimizations to several maps and the mouse zoom feature. Continuous optimizations are still on-going in response to feedback from a variety of players. We want to get it perfectly smooth for full release on August 8th! • Fixes to weapon targeting in some circumstances. I have decided to allow you to launch weapons at tiles with 1 unit so that the game feels more responsive and so players may anticipate a deployment with a missile. • Reduced the cooldown of Attack and Split Attack to half a second down from 1 second. https://cdn.steampulse.org/steam/asset?u=https%3A%2F%2Fsteamcdn-a.akamaihd.net%2Fsteamcommunity%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fclans%2F32657783%2Fff7a1bab2fc136f62bcd8947fdd806eade81bcb6.png
