I've thought before about a possible Doom 3 remake. The environments look good, there are some terrific enemy designs - especially the big zombies - and that P90-style sub-machine gun is great fun, too. But among the pantheon of FPS games , which naturally includes the original Doom, Doom 3 struggles to justify itself. It's a bit slow, a bit sober, and it's absent that kind of gliding-while-gunning sensation that makes the id Software series such chaotic fun. But now that's all changed. Thanks to a huge new mod, Doom 3 has been remade as an ultra-quick run-and-gun boomer shooter, closer to both Doom 2016, and the 1993 original. Read the rest of the story... Switch-owning fans of demon murder (who somehow still haven't played id Software's legendary Doom saga) are in luck; as part of this year's QuakeCon, id has announced a five-game Doom Slayers Collection for Nintendo's console, which is available to purchase now. The reveal isn't too much of a surprise - US retailer Best Buy successfully managed to leak the Doom Slayers Collection for Switch earlier today ahead of its official reveal - but the game's immediate post-announcement launch most certainly was, and Switch players can now enjoy some demon-hued FPS japes all in one bundle, featuring seminal 1993 original Doom, Doom 2, Doom 64, Doom 3, and 2016's sort-of-rebooted Doom. You can now rip and tear your way through Doom 3 in VR if you fancy it. The old PC game has been rejigged for the wireless VR headset Oculus Quest 1 and 2 by prolific modder DrBeef. Doom has always excelled in demon-busting combat, but the added prospect of VR makes the experience feel all the eerier. I, a coward, do not like the idea of taking on a spider with an upside-down head in VR, but you might be braver than I. The fan-made port is called Doom3Quest, and comes with more than 12 hours of campaign content alongside updated graphics. You can also expect fully tracked VR weapons and VR UI touchscreen interaction, among other things, to make the experience worthwhile on your Oculus Quest. Not content with letting players dive face first into the worlds of Half-Life and Return to Castle Wolfenstein , prolific modder DrBeef now has their sights set on porting Doom 3 over to wireless VR headset Oculus Quest . Ever wondered what's nestling behind a cacodemon's tonsils? Of course you have. We all have. Much like the modder's previous ports, Doom 3 will require the user to own a copy of the original game, alongside third party app SideQuest . This is a sideloading app for Oculus Quest that lets you do all sorts of neat stuff. Simon Brown, aka DrBeef, recently told UploadVR that running Doom 3 on the Quest requires "some concessions", but the game "runs surprisingly well without having to axe too much in terms of effects". Ah, Doom 64. In the absence of a PC, my console-fuelled video game childhood was left with Doom 64. But, improbably, Doom 64 was great. This 1997 Nintendo 64-exclusive Doom game was not a port of the original Doom, or any of the other Doom games. Nor was it meant to be the 64th Doom game (although by this point will it be?). Rather, it was a sequel developed by Midway that took place after Doom 2. I remember Doom 64 looking fantastic to my teenage eyes, and the music was properly atmospheric. You spent a lot of time shooting demons, of course, but there was a real horror feel to the game. It felt like Doom 64 was as good as Doom could get on Nintendo's console and, as someone who hadn't played Doom before, it also felt fresh. Read more

This is a story about Doom 3 's source code and how beautiful it is. Yes, beautiful . Allow me to explain. After releasing my video game Dyad I took a little break. I read some books and watched some movies I'd put off for too long. I was working on the European version of Dyad , but that time was mostly waiting for feedback from Sony quality assurance, so I had a lot of free time. After loafing around for a month or so I started to seriously consider what I was going to do next. I wanted to extract the reusable/engine-y parts of Dyad for a new project. When I originally started working on Dyad there was a very clean, pretty functional game engine I created from an accumulation of years of working on other projects. By the end of Dyad I had a hideous mess. In the final six weeks of Dyad development I added over 13k lines of code. MainMenu.cc ballooned to 24,501 lines. The once-beautiful…
- Doom 3: BFG Edition source code released - 27 November 2012
As it does so very kindly like to do, id Software has released another dollop of engine source code. This latest is somewhat less exciting than many, simply offering the updated Doom 3 source from the BFG Edition but hey, now the folks at home can make the best and shiniest Doom 3 games yet. As with id's other recent source releases, it's up on GitHub for your coding conveniences. Or you can download the full pack from Shacknews . Of course, just because the engine source has been released, it doesn't mean BFG Edition is free--all the game data and assets are still protected. Id has also dropped a new patch for the BFG Edition on PC, bringing fixes and a whole heap of new menu options to play with.

The release of Doom 3: BFG saw the disappearance of the original Doom 3 from Steam, notable for two reasons: 1) the game was rather cheap and 2) there were a bunch of mods for it. People were rightly pissed, Bethesda Softworks offered a hurried non-answer, and the whole thing looked like a cynical sales-protection strategy. Well, OK, fine, you win. Doom 3 , the original, is back on Steam. For $10. - Do Doom 3’s Graphics Hold Up? - 18 October 2012
I've always felt strangely about Doom 3 . On the one hand, it was a fairly revolutionary game, graphically. The lighting was striking. On the other hand, it looked kind of gross: humans in the game were starkly lit with strange, bump-mapped faces and odd, robotic movements. But is that a bad thing or does it add to the ambiance? Does the game's look stand the test of time, or is it a strange artifact from a simpler time? Here are some animated GIFs from the recently-released Doom 3 BFG Edition running on an Xbox 360. Although developer Id has promised that they're all working full-force on Doom 4 , we might not see much of that for a while. So at least we'll get a little bit of Doom this year. We've got ourselves a new trailer for October's Doom 3: BFG Edition . This one highlights the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 game's new eight-level "Lost Mission." But what about Doom 4 ? Id is still working on it—they even moved their mobile designers onto the project, begging off any more mobile gaming for the time being—but that's about all we know . Given that today is the kickoff for id's annual Quakecon event and that's all they're saying, that's pretty much all we're going to be told, officially, for quite some time.

The remastered edition of Doom 3 announced a few weeks ago will hit PCs, PS3s and Xbox 360s this October. The BFG edition of the classic first-person-shooter will also include full versions of Doom 1 and Doom 2 , along with seven new Doom 3 levels and the Resurrection of Evil add-on. The whole shebang will cost $29.99 for PCs and $39.99 for consoles.
