- AN UPDATE (MARCH 2026): NO MOVEMENT, BUT MUCH PUSHING - 2 April 2026
AN UPDATE! (April 2026)Hey folks! Here's where this build of The Dark Room on Steam currently stands: 1. I've got a great team of folks helping try to get the game finished / remade. Since about 2023 Imre Jele of Bossa Games has been assisting and we've spoken to various publishers and developers about a bunch of different approaches. It always comes down to money, which nobody has! I don't really want to run a Kickstarter, but that's looking increasingly like it may have to be the way. 2. What do I mean by "remade"? Well, since the game came out 8 years ago, a lot things have changed in the world (you'll note Elon Musk is mentioned positively in the trailer, which in 2026 is INSANE. Also the trailer says the game would release complete because I personally hated when games didn't do that. HA! Reality really kicked me in the nuts there, didn't it?) The current goal is to rebuild the gam…
- Happy New Ya Die! - 1 January 2019
Welcome to 2019, Darrens! The team is working on new art for level 2, and damn it, it's going to be an exciting year for this brutal little puzzle and party game. Here's how we kicked the year off, with 8/10 review from from the UK's premier science fiction magazine, Starburst! Kick arse out there, everybody! John
- Merry Christmas, Darrens! - 24 December 2018
Hello, Darrens! It's the night before Christmas, and all through the house, a creature is stirring, and you're going die. (No, it doesn't rhyme, but when you're dashing through the room, while a white-haired demon slays, you don't have time for poetry.) The Dark Room: Level One has just gotten a rave review from PC Powerplay magazine in Australia. I'm delighted! I've think I've successfully posted the photo on here, but if not here's the link. The team are having a break over the holiday period, but we'll be back soon, and soon the elves that weren't busy assembling toys for Santa will return to the job of assembling deathtraps for Darrens. Love to all, John
- Post - PAX Aus + DYKG - 2 November 2018
Hello, folks! Been awhile! I've been on tour! PAX Australia was a blast - we sold out of printed Steam Keys and t-shirts, but there's good news for folks who'd like to buy a The Dark Room pin down the line... stay tuned. The Dark Room live show went off - a beautiful full theatre, I filmed it - and so did PAX on Twitch! In Halloween news, The Dark Room was the voice for the Did You Know Gaming Extra Halloween Special And our team of hard-working programmers (it's one guy) is squashing bugs while plans for Level 2's delivery get put together. Nobody's gotten the Kafka achievement yet. x

- THE GAME IS OUT! - 20 September 2018
Ah, I'm so happy! The game is finally out! Welcome to Level One of The Dark Room! It wasn't always our plan to release the game in parts, but I think the team at Stirfire and I have put together a damn good adventure that you'll really enjoy/ become insane with rage at - especially when you realise how many changes we can slide into the updates when the game is literally folks being trapped in a dark room. There's 60 minutes of specially-created mo-cap footage in this level alone, and a host of puzzles and traps. Good luck. I'm going to see how you all do getting out of level one before I offer a reward. :-) So, my point is - we're here, it's going to be great - and The Dark Room will expand as we go! If you're thinking of buying it, get in now - it's 10% off, and your money helps fund the rest of the development costs, so we can bring you levels 2, 3 and Darkest as fast as we can. I LO…
