This is an active playstyle to squeeze out more exp from the hides you get. There are several steps to this process, and some are automated so that you could have multiple steps going on. The exp output of leatherwork was low in the last update, so with the previous exp increase and this providing even more exp for going through the process, it should bring it up to par with other skills.
