  • v4.1.1 Update Now Available - 24 September 2026

Version 4.1.1 is now available. This is a focused follow-up to 4.1 aimed at late-game performance. The most noticeable change is reduced lag when ending a turn in a large, late-game empire. We have also fixed a handful of crashes and made it harder for rivals to culture-flip your planets.EngineFixed late-game lag ending a turn due to stat calculations when colonies changing hands.Fixed late-game lag related to fleet range calculations.Colonies that lose their sponsor during a rebellion are no longer left stranded, and any stranded sponsor links in an existing save are repaired on load.Fixed a crash when mousing over the key terms in the Energy resource bar tooltip.Fixed a crash in multiplayer when a completed mission referred to a ship that was not in a fleet.GameplayInfluence is now much stronger on a planet's own tile and the six around it. A planet is much harder to culture-flip unle…

  • Dev Journal #123: The Galactic Roadmap - Fall 2026 Edition - 17 September 2026

We just finished version 4.1 which itself was a pretty big update with custom maps now working in multiplayer, steam workshop support for custom maps and lots of balance updates. So what's next? I'll divide this between the free updates and next DLC, Galactic Civilizations IV: Ascension The free updates, continuing to improve the user experience, performance, balance, and help make the existing DLCs mesh together better and better, is going to focus on these three things:New Planet UI.New Shipyard UIRedesign of Ship DesignNew Planet UIHere is a mockup. What we want is to have a multi-tab UI where the overview screen lets you still do all the main stuff you'd want to do on a given turn but lets users go into the nitty gritty about a particular planet. Mostly informational.Even the OS/2 version from 1993 had multiple tabs for planets:With stats and everything. We want to make the planets…

  • Dev Journal #122: Choosing Your Starting Government? - 12 August 2026

I've been having a lot of fun with the map editor. And it's let me make some interesting maps as well as find things to improve on it (looking at you default star names!)And while playing the game with the new Federations & Empires expansion I have come to realize that I would really prefer NOT to be forced to play as the Colonial Charter at the start of the game. I want to be able to start (if I want) as a Federation or Empire or whatever. So when setting up the game, I want to be able to select the starting government. The other government types would be still gated by their given cultural trait but this way, I am not forced to go down some cultural path just to get the government I wanted. There is also the head canon part.I want to know that I am playing against the Drengin EMPIRE from the start. So this is something we're looking at adding to the first update to the Federations & Empi…

The base game gives players one way to govern. Federations & Empires rebuilds the entire Government screen around each form's own resource, core loop, and free hero ship, so picking one means playing what feels like a different strategy game. The expansion is available now on Steam and it ships alongside a free Version 4.0 update for every Galactic…

  • Dev Journal #121: The Drengin Empire in Federations & Empires - 21 July 2026

Let's take a look at Galactic Civilizations v4.0: Federations & Empires from the perspective of the Drengin Empire. The galaxy calls them "cruel," yet they insist they merely believe in order. Yes, they keep the lesser species in labor camps, but have you considered the alternative? Idleness. They are, they claim, giving them purpose. And that's without getting into the "genocide" accusations. Reductive, in their view. They prefer the term demographic streamlining. A tidy galaxy is a happy galaxy. They don't hate other races; they simply love efficiency more than they love them. So before you judge, they'd remind you: they could have been rude about it. Instead, they conquered you politely. You're welcome. At long last, players will finally get to put themselves in their shoes by playing as an actual Empire. Let's take a look.We are going to play as the Drengin Empire in all their glory.…

  • v3.31 Update Now Available - 18 June 2026

Galactic Civilizations IV v3.31 Now AvailableThe v3.31 update for Galactic Civilizations IV is available now. This is a maintenance release focused on stability, balance, and quality-of-life fixes from community reports.Get GalCiv IV | Changelog HereStabilitySeveral crashes are fixed, including ones that could happen during startup, in late-game enemy turns, when closing the Ship Designer, and during turn rollover or autosave around the shipyard.Ship BalanceShip hull mass capacities have been raised across every hull size. Alongside that, the AI no longer designs ships that go into battle without weapons, so opponents field fleets that actually fight back.Economy & PlanetsPollution now scales more predictably on high-level worlds, so runaway pollution is no longer a problem. • They're Not Squatters - 11 June 2026

Dev Journal #120When a civilization chooses the Oligarchy government type, they get a “hero ship” and we originally called them squatters. The ship gets a special ability to go around to class 0 planets and claim them as collateral, which they use to purchase investments that get added to their portfolio. When investments mature, they provide a new executive order for the player. For example, Dumping Rights lets you flood a target foreign planet with your goods and get 10 turns of their income. It makes them mad but you have the money without going to war. Another one is Resource Embargo where you can have all the supplies of a given foreign core world go to your closest core world instead. It deprives them of resources for two years (24 turns) from their core worlds. But I’m drifting off topic here. The point being, the ship isn’t squatting. It is merely… acquiring planets that no one el…

  • Dev Journal #119: Spring Status Report - 4 June 2026

It has been a busy Spring. The Galactic Civilizations community has posted vast amounts of suggestions, requests and just generally amazing feedback. There really should be a study on why 4X game communities are just, well, they really are just the best. The new expansion, Federations & Empires is pretty closely tied with version 4.0. That’s because version 4 supports the new government system and the base government, Colonial Charter, comes with the game. This will be good news to players of the base game, but creates a wrinkle for us in that we can’t release the expansion pack until version 4 is done.Version 4So let’s talk about version 4.First off, the Colonial Character government replaces the old Policies and Leaders screens with a single unified screen for managing your interstellar government. The Colonial Charter government is the concept that you have a home world and your core a…

  • Dev Journal #118: Oligarchies in Federations & Empires - 21 May 2026

How might a hyper-capitalistic civilization develop in the future? That’s the question we wanted to play out and the upcoming expansion pack for Galactic Civilizations IV, Federations & Empires, will answer it. The Oligarchy form of government results in a very different set of gameplay mechanics from the other governments and today we’re going to dive into it.The BackgroundHere are some early concepts we played with how to manage these that I thought you might find interesting:You can play around with the interactive mockup here: GC4 Government: OligarchyThis eventually became this:And even that isn’t what it will fully look like. So let’s dive in!Holdings and the ProspectorThe Oligarchy's first new tool is the Prospector, a special ship you can only build while running an Oligarchy government. It works like a Colony ship in that you send it somewhere and it gets consumed on arrival, b…

  • Dev Journal #117: Empires in Federations & Empires - 14 May 2026

Greetings!Today I want to talk about what the Empire government actually does in the upcoming Federations & Empires expansion.I'm getting ahead of myself. So let me first walk through the idea of the new expansion, possibly the biggest we've ever done. In Galactic Civilizations IV: Federations & Empires, we are introducing governments. But really, we are using governments as an excuse to redo a lot of how the game is played without making people mad at us for changing the game so much. You can still play the old Colonial Charter system if you want, but now there are four new governments to play as, and each plays fairly differently. The new base government: ColonialI want to start with a few core elements of what a government even is in Galactic Civilizations, because we are basically taking the Policy and Leader systems that are in the current game and merging them together (in v4.0 the…

  • Dev Journal #116: The Tech Tree in the Room - 7 May 2026

Tech trees are one of those parts of a strategy game that look obvious from the outside and turn out, every single time, to be one of the hardest things to get right. Game designers have been struggling with how to present technology research to the player since the early 90s, and three decades in, nobody has really solved it. There are good answers, there are interesting answers, and there are answers that work for one game and fall apart in another. There is no settled answer. As part of the work going into GalCiv IV 4.0, we have been revisiting our tech tree. The question we are sitting with is whether to redo it from scratch or to focus on making the one we have more effective. Both are real options. Both have real costs. We are not done deciding.Pretty | Easy to Use | Provide Good Gameplay.Pick 2.But that doesn’t stop us from trying to have our cake and eat it too. And of course, th…

  • Federations & Empires Brings Distinct Government Forms - 6 May 2026

Federations & Empires Expansion - the largest governance overhaul in the series' history replaces a linear upgrade path with forms of governmentEach with its own screens, resources, and political mechanics, releasing July 30, 2026Wishlist the expansion nowStardock today announced Galactic Civilizations IV: Federations & Empires, a new expansion that introduces interstellar governments to the studio's space 4X strategy game. The expansion ships alongside a free version 4.0 update to the base game.In previous Galactic Civilizations titles, and in most strategy games of the genre, choosing a government form was a stat decision. You unlocked the next tier and clicked it. Federations & Empires replaces that progression with four distinct government forms, each with its own user interface, its own resources, and its own gameplay."Our goal is that each government type changes the way players p…

  • Dev Journal #115: Opening Moves - 29 April 2026

Strategy games are all about the opening move. Galactic Civilizations is no exception. In RTS games we call it “Build Order”. Back in the day, I played some of these RTS games “professionally”. Today, being old, I can’t even get out of Diamond 1 in StarCraft 2. But it is build order that keeps me at least Diamond. Knowing what to do when. One of the things I like about Galactic Civilizations, something that we hope to continue evolving, is making sure players have multiple interesting first choices. Where do you put your capital? What do you do with Mars? Do you build a Scout or a Colony Ship? Lots of interesting choices.Let’s walk through the various phases of a Galactic Civilizations game. You tell me if this matches what you run into. The Colony RushConceptThe galaxy is finite. Habitable planets are the scarcest resource in it. Every planet your neighbor colonizes is one you can't have…

  • v3.3 Update Now Available - 15 April 2026

Galactic Civilizations IV v3.3 Now AvailableChangelog hereThis update brings a new AI system, a streamlined faction creator, faster controls, and a long list of gameplay, balance, and stability fixes driven by community feedback.Adaptive AI The biggest addition in v3.3. Adaptive AI is a new gameplay option that gives struggling AI factions gradual bonuses to stay competitive. The bonuses fade as they catch up, so it doesn't tip the scales permanently. If you've had games where half the galaxy collapses while one faction runs away with it, this is the fix. On by default, toggle it off in gameplay options.AlienGPT The custom faction creator is simpler to use. Less friction, better filtering, and more variety in generated leaders.Controls Function keys and number keys now let you navigate screens and respond to events without clicking through menus. If you spend a lot of time in the bottom…
