- 0.3 Update: Campaigning, Career Mode and Exuberant Seal Clapping - 10 September 2026
Howdy, howdy — Like the body politic, I've been deep in campaign mode the last few months, building out Political Arena's campaign mechanics ahead of our 0.3 Early Access release. This one is a biggie: 0.3 will extend gameplay past the current two-year congressional term and introduce elections and campaigns for playable representatives and senators. (Presidential play, the other biggie Early Access milestone IMO, will come later.) Campaign!Scope is changing, y'all Anchoring our first go at election mechanics are Political Arena's simulated voter blocs, broken down by age, gender, race/ethnicity, and education.* I'm well and truly 150,000% amped for this — to the extreme… raised to the gabillionty. I'll go into more detail in upcoming updates, but I want to highlight a few features and dynamics that have me clapping with delight like an overstimulated seal:The strategy involved in allot…
- 0.21 Hotfix - 25 June 2026
Fixed bug that was causing the game to freeze upon the firing of the Bill Dashboard Tutorial.
- Political Arena 0.2 Is Live! - 24 June 2026
It's time for our first major Early Access update! We had originally planned to push this update much sooner, but first we needed to get our house in order. Our long-term commitment to bringing a full-fledged political sim into existence meant Political Arena got to Early Access in a rather breakneck manner, with little time for things like "best practices," "rest" or "thinking." We now have a plan in place to ensure that the game will grow faster and more robustly. More on that at the end of this update. So … Early Access 0.2!Have you ever bemoaned the lack of worker deployment mechanics in legislative simulators? Do you often find yourself perusing this year's National Defense Authorization Act and wishing it were stamped with a visual meter conveying the bill's political health? Well, we have – quite a bit – and yes, your assumptions about our Saturday night plans are probably correct…
- Leveling Up Legislation / Catalyzing Career Mode - 24 March 2026
Howdy! My last update promised more frequent updates and then... went quiet for a long time. Before we can switch into smaller, more regular updates, we needed to get a massive update done – and I didn't want to surface until I had something real to show for it. I do now, so let's get into it.(For those of you new to Political Arena, I'm the only person working full time on development, so when the development load is heavy, I tend to be a bit scarce.)Leveling Up LegislatingOur 0.2 release will center around an entirely revamped bill lifecycle that greatly increases Political Arena's legislative drama and strategy. The two anchoring features are:Bill ModifiersLike politicians, legislation now has its own stats. Rather than simply being a container for a policy change that NPCs have opinions about, we're evolving bills into dynamic political entities whose success or failure will be stra…
- New Year's Resolution: More Frequent Content Updates - 8 January 2026
Happy (....🤷) 2026!It's been just over four months since Political Arena launched into Early Access, and the holidays provided a good opportunity to take stock of how things are going. You may have noticed I've pushed several small patches over the last couple of weeks. While these patches are nothingburgers as content updates go, their increased cadence stems from a major conclusion we came to in our year-end review. The tl;dr is simple: we plan to slim down the amount of content in our "major" updates and spread it across a series of smaller – and more regular – updates. If you're curious about the behind-the-scenes thinking, read on. If not, see you in the digital political trenches. If there was a mistake I was most guilty of following our Early Access launch, it was an impulse to pack every update with new content, quality-of-life improvements, and bug fixes – to make everything … a…
- 0.153 Update: Bug Fixes - 8 January 2026
Fixed character creator settings issue that disconnected partisanship, dogamitism, presidential party and ideology inputs from game settings. Fixed UI glitch in Character Creator that caused skill sliders to start out in the middle of the despite being at zero and labeld “awful.”Fixed bug where party line votes could prevent one party’s yeas and nays from being displayed.
- 0.152: Minor Update - 5 January 2026
Hello one and all! Two small fixes: Fixed ui bug where partisan breakdowns weren't being properly registered in a new game.Rewired to properly handle ironman mode / Steam Achievements
- 0.151 Update: 2Bugs2Fixed - 30 December 2025
Happy bizarro week. Two small but key fixes: - Changed how the game tracks whether legislating has begun on January 3, 2025. Certain edge cases would lead to the game thinking legislating hadn't begun and cause things to go 💩. - Fixed State of the Union race condition that could allow for the same SOTU window to fire two times in a row.
- 0.15 Update: Staff! - 24 December 2025
0.15 Update: Staff!Hiya!Let’s cut to the chase: we just pushed our 0.15 update, and as “regular updates” go, it’s a biggie.First and foremost, 0.15 introduces staff to Political Arena. Staff are arguably the most invisibly vital part of politics — and so they’re going to be among the most visibly vital parts of Political Arena.Staff will eventually be deployed across all of the game’s systems — legislative, campaign, and more. For the time being (until our next update), staff’s main purpose is to bolster your stats. Specifically, each of your five staffers is responsible for one of your five stats. If a staffer role is left empty, you’ll suffer a penalty.Staff RolesChief of Staff → DisciplineLegislative Director → IntelligenceDistrict Director → EmpathyCommunications Director → CharismaScheduler → Stamina The single biggest challenge facing your staff is your limited budget. Members of…
- Bits and Pieces: One Month of Early Access! - 2 October 2025
Political Arena has been in Early Access for one month. Yes, it was a long gestation, and our newborn is keeping us up at night, but when we gaze upon its tangled web of ambitions, outsized personalities, moral ambiguities and shifting alliances, we know it was worth it. Positive SignsWishlists are greatly outpacing wishlist conversions, meaning there’s large numbers of players well beyond our initial community who are interested in what we’re building. No fewer than one-third of our players are from outside the United States, confirming our longstanding belief that U.S. politics – like English football, American basketball, vikings and samurai – is one of those nation-specific subjects with international appeal. We suspect that percentage will only grow as the game’s scope expands. Put another way, it’s wild how many people in Brazil are interested in what is currently a U.S. legislativ…
- 0.13 Hotfix - 20 September 2025
Small fix introducing logic to sanitize save file names to ensure they're valid for both Windows and macOS. Players were reporting crashes due to save file names with invalid characters.
- Political Arena 0.12 Notes: Achievements! Save System Fixes! - 19 September 2025
G’day! I just pushed our latest update. Gameplay updates Ironman/Steam Achievements added. Point tracking added to character creator. Cannot enable achievements going over point allotment. Vote window post-vote recap now features a party breakdown Committee windows now show a breakdown of the issues under the committee’s jurisdiction.Autosave system implemented. Escape and enter functionality for alert windows PatchesFurther improvements to vote window tracking to address vote discontinuity issues. Major performance fixes to loading: times reduced by ~10x (if you’re curious, every saved entity was scanning a thousands-long list of assembly definitions, rather than caching them for easier reference) . More on AchievementsI love a dumb pun – and also playing for the lulz – so I am more than a little excited to have Steam Achievements enabled for Political Arena. We weren’t originally plan…

- Week one of Political Arena and Steam Political Sim Fest! - 9 September 2025
Political Arena creator Eliot Nelson here. It’s been a week since Political Arena launched into Early Access and I wanted to take a moment from fixing bugs and building out the next updates to say "thank you" and...wow. Wow...Seriously, WowWe’re stunned by the level of interest and support for our simulated political universe. Given how quiet our launch was and the very early state of the game, we were not expecting this level of interest. I can't tell you how much this means to me and I promise to work as hard as I can to reward your early investment in our vision with a genre-defining game about the world's most important subject.Political Sim FestSteam’s Political Sim Fest launched yesterday. Of the more than 600 games participating in the promotion, we’re the 10th most popular as of this post going live. What’s arguably most remarkable is that every game ahead of us is far more buil…
- Unstable Branch Update - 4 September 2025
Having weird vote issues? Give this a try. To switch to the unstable branch, right click on Political Arena in your Steam library, select "Betas" and choose "unstable" from the dropdown. No password required. Updated tracking of UI votes and UI vote queue. Previously a shared "CurrentVote" reference may have been improperly transitioned across votes, leading to tracking issues and passed votes being listed as failed, etc. Fixed Event Window issue. The game's event queue was being dequeued twice when closing the vote window, potentially leading to race conditions Capped the number of AI-generated votes per week. Committees and chambers now For most votes, the AI now only schedules them for AFTER their body's last vote on the calendar. Quality of life: too many votes can get repetitive. With too many votes, the value of getting your bill a vote loses its cache / no reason to spend PC to g…
- Hotfix 0.11 Update - 3 September 2025
PROBLEM SOLVERS CAUCUS....ACTIVATECreated an unstable branch for people to try out experimental fixes and features. To access it, right click Political Arena in your library, bring up the properties window, go to betas and select “unstable”. No password required. Currently there is nothing there as of this update going live. Will likely be mostly used to see if fixes work for players having issues. The bug form now accepts feedback and suggestions. Submissions are fed directly into the dev’s management software and Slack, so they will be seen! Some votes weren’t being registered as the player cast them, owing to improper referencing of the player’s pre-calculated automated vote. Improved how the vote window interacts with the game’s underlying architecture. Some players were having bizarre vote results (failing 80-20 in the Senate with the filibuster at 60, etc). This likely resulted in…
- Political Arena is in Early Access! - 2 September 2025
Political Arena has launched in Early Access! Our first release is all about the people, power and politics that drive Congress and the legislative process. Play as any senator or representative for a term of Congress and navigate a world of backroom dealing, down-to-the-wire votes, White House power jockeying and more. If you’ve purchased a copy, please consider giving us a positive review. We’d never expect mindless enthusiasm, but even if you think the game shows promise and want to say so, it’d mean a lot. We’ve also launched the first in a series of videos detailing Political Arena’s features. The first video, appropriately enough, takes a look at the politicians of Political Arena.Already the game is filled with countless things to do, and no two playthroughs are remotely the same… …try to legislate as an aisle-crossing maverick when your majority leader is hyperpartisan and vengef…

- New Year’s Update! - 23 January 2024
Happy 2024, everyone! We just released our second beta update and are heartened by our testers’ excited and constructive feedback. Our current development focus continues to be on implementing legislative mechanics and interfaces. Specifically, we’re fine-tuning the budget process, which will inform the rest of our legislative architecture – the federal budget process is the one bit of legislating that Congress must undertake in any given year (in theory). The federal budget may not spring to mind when you think of politics’ more exciting bits, but at the ground level -- where Political Arena lives -- it’s rife with drama. It incorporates many of Political Arena’s most exciting and immersive features and mechanics: issues and policy, special interests, the media, negotiations, personalities and their impact on AI behavior, and more. On that note, we’re altering our feature roadmap. We h…
- Political Arena Beta Testing Has Begun! - 23 August 2023
First, an apology. We’ve been lousy about our updates. We’re a small team and our chief goal is to get you Political Arena ASAP so you start enjoying this game. The long hours are paying off: We're excited to announce that we’re beginning beta testing! Earlier today we shared the first preview of Political Arena with our several hundred beta testers. It's a brief preview, as our goal is to get some initial feedback on the game’s scope, tone and direction and to better organize our feature roadmap. The feedback thus far has been amazing. Not only are our testers jazzed by what they're seeing -- and clearly they share our vision of what the game can be --but they're offering really constructive feedback and Political Arena will be much better for it. We took a real body blow last year when two developers left our production partner for new opportunities. However we reorganized and are mak…
