- Better translations; settings explanations; option for old encounters - 14 September 2026
Added explanation text for many options and scenario settings Improved all translations across all languages Added back legacy encounters, togglable in options Updated encounter txt file versions to prevent errors when using outdated mods Fixed issue with encounter state difficulty guidance prompt in Unified mode causing parsing errors Fixed rare issue in which corrupted state in scenario editor could break background image generation Added option to re-order party members Added option to right-click to revive corpses Consolidated “Unlimited undos and respecs” and “Allow spawning entities” into “Sandbox editing” which is more indicative of what it does
- Revised Encounters - 31 August 2026
Revised Encounters Bars: There are now end-state bars vs status effect bars. AI is encouraged to output 0 end-state bars for pure combat. End-state bars use pure win/lose guidance to avoid contradicting the story when hitting a terminal point. Encounter turn: After each player turn, AI determines whether encounter gets a turn at all. To compensate, the encounter prompt itself was slightly strengthened to prevent the opposition from hemming and hawing. Spotlight (can be disabled in options): Focuses encounter turn on a random encounter participant when applicable Misc Added follow-up step confirming AI-picked ability or item in Specialized mode, in which the description is included, to further prevent wrongly picked items/abilities Fixed some logic deduping spawned place entities with spawned entity icons Tweaked passage-of-time prompts to discourage moving random NPCs into private dwell…
- More fixes - 19 August 2026
Preset fix Fixed UC Berkeley preset which had unintentionally stripped out all references of Judo, and added easter egg ability/perk combo for osoto gari Gameplay Improved logic for picking required item/ability in Specialized mode Improved fix for silent NPCs, when talking to them via the conversation dropdown. Tweaked ability generation to make Tier 1 less useless Doubled quest XP because it was underpowered Reduced tier bonus/penalty from 15 to 10, to make harder fights less impossible TTS Added model input to TTS options Added custom TTS support for non-mp3 audio Fixed custom TTS not displaying specified voices in character voice dropdown Bugs Fixed XP multiplier failing to apply to quest completion Fixed error when parsing certain models’ output of survival bar deltas Fixed issue where Thai characters would be mangled before being passed to TTS Fixed rare save corruption that could…
- Fixes - 5 August 2026
Silent NPCs issue: Edited default narrative rules to slightly improve chances of NPCs responding with dialogue when appropriate. This fix is not foolproof. If the issue persists, please file a bug report. Fixed bug in multiplayer where client healing themselves would result in host being healed Fixed error when AI needed to edit narrative rules caused by ${perspective_inst} which is now an expected placeholder Fixed multiplayer bug where attributes, skills, and abilities from non-hosts often weren’t saved Fixed error when starting location wasn’t specified Fixed glitchy tooltip for community scenarios/characters Fixed bug where scenario settings could be wrongly grayed out in game Added destination npc descriptions to context when changing locations Added logic to add first-appearance story turn to NPC interaction history Removed blocked/locked from entity generation prompts since block…
- Multiplayer & Scenario Sharing - 26 July 2026
Scenario Editor Overhauls Improved Customization Vastly enhanced customization for world “presets” aka scenarios, including the ability to generate/regenerate images for each entity, as well as pre-populate entities, locations and regions via the map editor Map Editor Overhaul Added options to generate new world polygons as procedural (original), hexagonal, or blank slate Added free-form polygon tool for users to draw custom maps from scratch Character Import/Export Added option to export an in-game character or the current character in scenario editor, as well as import it as an NPC in an existing game or into the scenario editor Community Added option to share scenarios/characters with the community and download others’ scenarios/characters Multiplayer Added multiplayer functionality to the game. To play, navigate to the multiplayer tab icon and toggle on “Enable multiplayer” and “All…
- Visual Enhancements, Bug Fixes - 24 June 2026
Visual Enhancements Added animated change effect for HP bars, player/world status bars, and encounter status bars, which makes it far easier to visually see the direction and amount of change that occurred per turn. Added zoom upon hover effect for selectable entities, configurable in options. Added back improved sprite VFX animations for: Entity damaged, entity healed, instant defeat, charm, level-up, and static object destroyed. VFX animations will also run on grid mode sprites if they exist. Revised flashing effect indicating selectable entities during item/ability usage to be more consistent. Updated placeholder images for locations, static objects, NPCs, enemies, items, abilities, and player portrait. The default NPC placeholder image is no longer a picture of my dog. To compensate, I've added a console command "pongo" and/or toggle in options to make the NPC placeholder an even cu…
- Sentiment minor overhaul, misc fixes - 18 June 2026
Sentiment Increased sentiment min/max to -100 and +100 to fix issue where characters would become your best friend or worst enemy too fast. Increased delta range to -10 and +10 to give AI more freedom in how fast sentiment changes. Map Added merge regions and split regions functionality in map editor. Quests Fixed double quest completion issue by using an extra quick LLM call to decide whether the quest was already finished before triggering the quest finishing turn, for V5 quests. If so, grants the XP without triggering another turn. Misc Fixed skill XP and on-demand skills going to player character rather than current actor Fixed bug where “allow history summary to overwrite NPC descriptions” didn’t respect the per-character “lock name and description” toggle Added add perk button for new game view Fixed bug where dragging things in map caused image to temporarily disappear Added supp…
- 4 Followers, Stop Button, and Fixes - 10 June 2026
4 Followers Added capability for 4 followers. The number of followers whose descriptions are included in context will depend on your configurable scenario context limits, though the game will try to prioritize the most important characters as usual. Stop Button Implemented stop button to cancel current generation. Includes logic to auto-undo (only if save would've ended up in a corrupted state). Misc Fixed free cloud multi-voice TTS dialogue/script being generated incorrectly, by using a better model for this task Fixed various errors in Panoramic mode Improved truncation logic to reduce chance of broken JSON output by truncating the ruleset before truncating the JSON instructions in Unified mode Improved messaging for system/user prompt exceeded in general Fixed bug in item transfer logic preventing new item from appearing if source wasn’t found Added logic to allow player edits to sto…
- Perk trees - 3 June 2026
Perk trees Each playable character gets 3 class-based passive perk trees. Spend points to unlock perks, then pick which ones should be active in context at any given time (limit can be configured in scenario context options). Access the perks view via the "Perks" button in the abilities section when opening your character inventory/info. Misc Added “perks” cheat code to unlock all perks Fixed image gen not working at all for some international users Added logic for grid mode sprite generations to allow non-background-removed sprites on free tier if daily limit was exceeded
- Nostalgia builds - 2 June 2026
Added two AI Roguelite “Nostalgia” builds as free DLCs. These have a special place in my heart because they were made back when LLMs and image generators were budding technologies which barely worked and weren’t controversial. Since ChatGPT hadn’t been invented yet, the game used clever tricks to try to turn crazy LLM outputs into useful game mechanics, and the narratives were more like fever dreams. Version 1.8 (corresponds to the July 18, 2022 announcement) Version 1.1 (corresponds to the March 24, 2022 announcement) Please note these DLCs require an NVIDIA GPU with 8GB+ VRAM, because the only cloud services available at the time would’ve cost hundreds of dollars per month per user.
- Hotfix - 26 May 2026
Fixed duplicate key dictionary corrupt save issue when pressing "Take control" on oneself Fixed player injured button appearing clickable when it's not Fixed white line graphical glitch in some buttons
- Playable characters, enhanced character details, UI changes, etc. - 20 May 2026
Enhanced character details Additional character details such as personality, background, and relationship to current character will be generated if a character has been mentioned enough times in the story. This will be presented as a confirmable icon; it can also be manually triggered at any time by going into the character sheet and pressing “Generate details”. Take control of party members Click “Take Control” to convert a follower into a playable character with their own attributes, skills, equipment, and inventory. A message will remind you you’re currently acting on their behalf, and if you open your inventory or character panel, you’ll see the currently controlled character’s info rather than the main player character’s info. Character sheets A new character sheet UI helps track new character fields, and also includes an equipment/inventory display where you can drag/drop between…
- Minor model quality issues expected for a few more days - 17 May 2026
I am currently having issues with one of my service providers. I believe I've already resolved model quality issues for all requests except Unified mode. For unified, I'm using a backup model which performs about as well as the preferred model when it works, but doesn't follow instructions quite as accurately and has the tendency to randomly produce wrongly formatted text about 1% of the time. Many of you may have already noticed this. Sorry for the inconvenience. I'm hoping to be migrated to the preferred model within 1 week. For now, retrying the failed query should help as a workaround. Please feel free to continue to report issues involving extremely long response times, non-Unified requests, or persistent/game-breaking issues with the Unified model. Thanks, Max Update 05/19/26: As a further mitigation I've managed to reduce the number of errors by ~95% using server-side retry logic…
- Better TTS, new subscription tier, and more - 20 April 2026
Improved TTS All users across all tiers can now enjoy vastly improved TTS logic: LLM-generated script: Uses an LLM to generate which voice says what, which is vastly superior to naive algorithmic matching based on punctuation. TTS options: Choose from single-voice narration, narration with dialogue (abridged, omitting text like “he said”), narration with dialogue (full), or dialogue only. Voice matching system: Each NPC now gets a “voice profile” which can be matched to a specific voice in your chosen TTS service as defined in the .json file under the TTS folder. These include gender, approximate age, and tags such as “deep” etc. Sapphire users now have a new TTS option that many might prefer over Tiktok TTS. Added a custom TTS option for you to specify your own service URL. Voice IDs may be specified for a quick setup, but for a full proper setup, you should configure your .json file f…
- Model updates and some bug fixes - 3 April 2026
Model refresh Updated Sapphire text gen to a significantly better and faster model for question-answering and Specialized mode story generation. Some users in some languages may experience quality issues with the story generator. In this case, please use the "Creative" story model override which uses the previous version. Please also report the issue so I can update the default language settings; so far, it is only set to default to the older model if the user's language is Chinese. Updated Silver and Free text models to incrementally better models for question-answering and Specialized story generation. Misc Added support for editing currency info when editing world in universe view Possibly fixed very old saves (predating quests V4) failing to load Improved calendar event detection for Unified mode Added API history for Unified mode Improved learned ability prompt (thanks to YeOldeMil…
- Better unified mode, better fast travel, tons of fixes - 20 March 2026
Spawn entities Added spawn entity, spawn item, and spawn new location on map. This is more convenient than console commands. This is on by default for Adventure and Roguelite settings. Added options for spawning entities in grid mode Minor fast travel overhaul By default, traveling beyond your current travel radius is now allowed. In these cases, the LLM will be told that the time it takes to travel may be longer than usual. This can be toggled on/off in Scenario Settings. Place initialization options Added option to avoid initializing entities in new areas in hierarchical mode Added option to declare a specific place as unsuitable for entity initialization in hierarchical mode (for example if you had added a bunch of NPCs before visiting and wanted to avoid generating more upon visiting) New game options Added optional “opening scene description” in new game view Added option to specif…
- Unified mode - 10 March 2026
Unified game master mode Background: Under the original system (now known as “Specialized”), each task would be broken down into a separate prompt and handled individually. There was a separate prompt for plausibility, item usage, skill/attribute selection, target selection, story generation, event checks, and event check follow-ups. In Unified mode, most of these tasks are consolidated into a single big prompt, leaving only the skill/attribute selection and event check follow-ups as separate calls. This allows the LLM to see the whole context at once, resulting in a much lower chance of contradictions. For example, the long-standing problem of the AI saying you used an item or ability, then subsequently penalizing you for it, is unlikely to happen in Unified mode. Event checks are also more likely to match the story because they are generated in the same turn as the story. I also devel…
- Increased rate limits for grid mode and panoramic mode + fixes - 18 February 2026
Slightly improved grid mode generation model May take on average 1 minute to generate a new grid. Please report an issue if the grid generation takes longer than 2.5 minutes. Increased grid mode and panoramic rate limits for Sapphire Increased Sapphire grid generations and panoramic generations to 30 per day. If you are seeing less than 30 per day, the primary service might be down; please report the issue. If you see a white screen in panoramic mode, it may have been censored due to the panoramic NSFW filter being much more strict than the text gen filter. Please report the issue especially if it was a false positive. Introducing Panoramic mode for Free tier Non-subscribing users may now use up to 3 panoramic generations per day. Fixed Sapphire high-cost video generations I found out, just yesterday by accident, that high-cost quest videos had been completely broken and producing nonse…
- Some fixes - 4 February 2026
Reduced over-triggering of AI-picked used items/abilities in open-ended mode Fixed bug where custom narrative flavor input sometimes wouldn’t be displayed Fixed a number of issues with i18n (non-English) scenarios incorrectly generating text in English Fixed a number of bugs regarding dynamic quest state/completion Added subtle color flashing to View Skills button if it hasn’t been clicked on since last level-up Added feedback button on main menu Fixed player starting faction not being saved in preset Fixed bug where sometimes grid mode would be invisible until save/reload Fixed bug when pressing X to unfavorite an entity Fixed bug with traveling prompt when using fast travel or specifying instructions
- Panoramic Mode, Time Tracking, and more - 26 December 2025
Time tracking Calendar Calendar info and start date will be generated at the start of each new scenario. They can be configured in the new game calendar tab. The standard Gregorian calendar will be used in most cases, but some fantasy scenarios may bias towards a custom calendar. Calendars are one per universe. The datetime will be displayed at the top. Left click on the datetime to change the display format. Change whether it’s am/pm or 24-hour in game options. Events and time tracking The journal now has a new tab called “Events” where you can add or keep track of existing events. Events have a start time, duration, recurrence, recommended location, and optional “missed effect” which injects text into the prompt if you missed the event. The event checker can also add, edit, delete events, or mark events as attended. The event checker can also increment time. Some game elements previou…
