- Update 0.90 - 3 January 2026
Hello there!Version 0.90Game version is updated to 0.90.If you noticed, I didn't write "Beta version" and I didn't write "Demo version" and there is a reason for that.As the release date is getting closer (less than 3 weeks from now), and as chapter 10 is a direct continuation of chapter 9 (no spoilers, but you would probably figure that one out with their names being "Odd" and "Even"), I've decided to make an effort and finish both chapters of the story for version 0.90.So this means two things regarding this release:Version 0.90 is actually the full game. It has all levels, all features, tested and stable. Thus, I don't want to call it a "beta" anymore (even though it is not 1.00 yet). Still, only the beta testers can access it.The only main addition is actually the last chapters of the story and their Custom Chapters content. This makes releasing a demo version 0.90 redundant. It wil…
- The New Roadmap - 2 December 2025
Hi there!Long Story ShortGuards vs Goats version 1.00 officially releases on January 22, 2026.Long Story LongAs you can see, this is a new version of the roadmap. Keeping the old one just for reference. As stated earlier, I thought again about the early access idea and decided that I should drop it.I wanted early access because:This is my first game.I wanted feedback before the official release. It seemed like a lot of developers are doing it so it seemed like a good idea.I've dropped the early access idea because:This is not an RPG or an online game. Although there is the Custom Chapters mode, still, the game is revolving around a story. This game is not long enough to sell only a partial experience.Feedback I will get for the official release in any case. I don't plan on dropping the game on the players and eject. I will be around to fix bugs and implement doable suggestions. The early a…
- Update 0.80 - 16 November 2025
Hi There!Guards vs Goats is now in version 0.80, both Beta and Demo, and a lot is happening in this version so let's get started.Chapter VIIIAdded the eighth chapter of the game.It takes place in a new castle (not in Newcastle). It also adds another small area (don't want to spoil too much). Both new places and a new set of guards added to Custom Chapters as well.Volumetric Fog & LightingThe heading says it all.New Combat Mode - MixedI wanted to change the Hack & Slash combat mode and while working on it, I realized that whatever I do, it won't be Hack & Slash anymore. So I left Hack & Slash as it is except for a little polishing (will be described below) and instead, I've decided to add yet another combat mode - Mixed.Yes, now you have 4 different combat modes to choose from.I wanted to add the combat "duet" feel you have in Timed and Timed + Directional combat modes, but I wanted it to b…
- Demo Version 0.72 - 5 October 2025
Hello There!Released version 0.72 of the demo and the beta. The ContentThis version was unplanned. It is actually the demo and the beta built with the latest patch of the Unity editor I'm using. The ReasonIf you're following the latest gaming news, you'd probably stumble on the security exploit discovered on games built on some of the Unity versions. You can find the official statement in Unity's site and probably tons of YouTube streamers talking about it, while some suggest urgency, some saying "it is not that important".Bottom line, it is advised by Unity to download the latest patch of your Unity editor's version and build your game with it, and this is basically what I did for both the demo and beta of Guards vs Goats. That's it.See you in version 0.80 (level 8 in a new castle and oh boy! It's coming up nicely so far).Cheers!
- Demo Version 0.71 - 18 September 2025
Hello There! The game version reached 0.71 and with it, I'm happy to introduce one of the main features of this game: Custom Chapters. While this version was in the initial roadmap and the 0.7x version plan, I've decided to focus on development, canceling the Early Access (at least for now) and try to release the game as a whole on January.Detailed post about the new roadmap will be published soon, but for now, I want to show off the game's new feature a bit.Custom ChaptersThe game doesn't have to end when the story ends. While the main game is story driven and scripted with some beautiful voice acting, you have a chance to play a custom chapter with characteristics you choose for yourself.Take Valliant with you to rescue Princess Rebecca from Lord Sinclair's castle. Survive a deadly ambush in the woods with a fellow guard by your side.Help protect Kate from a group of raiding bandits.Curr…
- Demo Version 0.70 - 13 August 2025
Hi There! The game version reached 0.70 and if you read the previous Roadmap post, that's a major milestone for the game as one of the 0.7x versions will be the first early access version. So now:Demo version 0.70 is released.Beta version 0.70, containing levels 1 to 7, is released but still in a closed beta. Worry not, though! The early access version is coming soon.If you read the previous Demo 0.60 post, I may sound like a broken record, but I had so much fun working on this one.Aside for the added level 7, the main concept of this version is interaction / physics.Interaction / PhysicsDisclaimer: This kind of a topic is best viewed in a video, so I'll create one soon and upload it to my YouTube channel. Stay tuned! Some of the feedback I got about the game is that it is lacking the world "responding" to the player. They were right. The world indeed was too static and mainly based on Guar…
- Roadmap [Deprecated] - 3 August 2025
This roadmap is deprecated.A new one will be published soon.In short: Early Access has been canceled. The game will be fully released on January 2026.Keeping the old Roadmap for archive.Hello there! It's time for another progress update and while at it, I think it'll be best if I share the development roadmap of this game.First, the actual roadmap and then a bit details about it plus some details about levels 5&6 and the upcoming level 7.The RoadmapLet's jump right into it and then I'll elaborate a bit.Mid August 2025 - Build 0.70 of the demo and the beta. It will include:Level 7 (beta only).More engine enhancements. Some minor bugfixes.Mid September 2025 - Still on build 0.7x.More features.Polishing.Groundwork for the custom chapters.Mid October 2025 - Early Access.A well polished version 0.7x.Levels 1 to 7.Some fun custom chapters based on levels 1 to 7 locations and characters.Christma…
- Demo Version 0.60 - 16 July 2025
Hello there!Game development is in version 0.60 at the moment and this means:Released version 0.60 of the demo.Released an internal Beta version 0.60 containing levels 1 to 6.Version 0.60 introduces level 6 which is slightly different from levels 1 to 5.I had a LOT of fun working on that one and I hope the players will have as much fun playing it.News item about level 6 along with level 5 will come in separate. Here I want to talk about the demo which contains the 0.60 changes to the game engine. So let's begin.StealthInitially this game was planned as an action only game. Kinda like a 3D version of 80s swordplay platformer games (I don't know if I'm allowed to mention names here).Recent comments added on top of a personal sense of lack in gameplay made me realize there is room for one more big aspect to this game which I'm able to implement. And so I did.Hiding BodiesYou are now able to…
- Demo Version 0.53 - 13 June 2025
Hello there!Game development is in version 0.53 at the moment and this means:Released version 0.53 of the demo.Released an internal Beta version 0.53 containing levels 1 to 5.Introducing Another Combat Mode: Hack & SlashWhile my personal preferences are the timed and directional combat modes, I've noticed most of the demo players actually prefer the good old hack & slash combat system, usually seen in many RPG games. So, while keeping the existing modes, I've decided to add yet another combat mode to the game: Hack & Slash. In Hack & Slash, there is no perfect blocking, neither by the enemy nor by the player.Every hit counts.Every hit reduces health. The amount varies by the attack's timing and if the enemy/player were blocking.Player has the ability for continuous block. In this mode, timing is not important for player blocking, so you can hold the block key.My suggestion:In the intro/tra…
- Chapter IV - 1 May 2025
Hi there! Finished working on Chapter (level) IV. Game (beta) version is now 0.41. Demo was updated accordingly. Lady Drucilla's castle. What's Inside? Without giving too much spoilers, chapter IV is about Lady Drucilla and occurs in her castle. Having said Lady Drucilla, I would like to thank Dani Finn again for her amazing voice work, help with promoting the game and for streaming the demo play. Very much appreciated! So, what do we got here? New castle. New guard models. New guard voices. All engine improvements mentioned in the previous Demo 0.41 update announcement What's Next? Working on chapter V. Once I'm done with chapter V, I'm planning to do another engine improvements round and release demo version 0.50. Release (Up)Date It appears I won't make it to finishing the game on Q2, so I postponed the release to Q3. Hoping to release somewhere around mid-summer. New Guards Lady Dru…
- Demo Version 0.41 - 17 April 2025
Hi there! Level 4 is done. A news post about it will be posted very soon. After the demo release and during the time of the Next Fest, I've received some important and precious feedback. At that point, I've decided to work in two dimensions: Add more content and enhance the game. I wanted to make a big enhancement break after finishing level 5. Then, I've got the privilege of watching the lovely Dani Finn which is the voice actress of Lady Drucilla (level 4 and no-spoilers...) and also a streamer, playing the demo and I understood that some key elements in the demo need to be sharpened in order for new players to enjoy it a bit more. So I made a couple (more than a couple) of additions, fixes and tweaks and uploaded Demo version 0.41. Before proceeding to the details, I would like to thank each and everyone who played the demo and left feedback. Yes, I want this game to succeed, but mor…
- The Journey to the Official Release - 20 March 2025
Hi there! It has been a super busy month for the guards and for the goats so I have lots to share. The Past Major milestones accomplished: The official demo was released. GvG participated in Steam Next Fest! Two important things happened thanks to the above two: The game got more exposure. I've got some important comments about the demo which I intend to apply to the game. The Present In parallel to the demo and the Next Fest mania, I've continued developing the game and finished level 2 and 3. Level 3 introduces new game modes: Boss Fight and Run. Now working on level 4 and level 4 will add a new spirit to the game: A new castle. New guards. Models and voices! A new boss. Reminding you that castles and bosses that are unlocked in story mode can be used in custom chapter mode. Images from Level 2 and 3 Boss Fight Run The Future Hoping to finish level 4 soon, I'll be glad to share info a…
- The Art Is Covered - 26 February 2025
Hello! I am very excited about this one! Cover art means a lot to me. Whether it is for games or metal albums, I was always fascinated by cover art. The feeling usually gets better when I discover the content (game, music or film) matches the spirit of its cover art. This is what I wanted for my game as well. A beautiful cover art which represents the game itself. So, say hello to Guards vs Goats' official cover art, done by the magnificent Johanna Schmidt, who is a super talented artist and a great person. Feel free to check her art out: Schwarky Art - Johanna Schmidt Illustrationen Cheers!
- Demo Version 0.20 - 23 February 2025
What's Inside? Bugfix: Fixed a bug where sometimes the enemy distributor was not assigning enemies to William or his sidekick. Small UI tweaks. Small animation tweaks. Cheers!
- Demo Version 0.19 - 19 February 2025
What's Inside? Better sky. Dark mode is now the default mode. Also, a bunch of small stuff which can make a big difference to some players: Ultra-wide screen support. Option to invert Y axis. Option to set look sensitivity. Guards can be hit when drawing their weapon. Enjoy!
