- Dishonored director Harvey Smith thinks there's still room for big-budget immersive sims: 'When it really comes together and it has the budget behind it and the team, you end up with Deus Ex or Dishonored' - 15 September 2026
Should immersive sims rein in their budgets? Thief designer Randy Smith Evergreen thinks so. We chatted to him last month, where he said a lot of immersive sims are in "an arms race to be bigger and better" , but that the size of the audience and the competition from other big-budget games makes that a mistake... - A multi-month delay for Deus Ex turned into a huge payoff for one of its best characters, says designer Harvey Smith - 3 September 2026
Nobody likes game delays. Sure, a delay is temporary and suck is forever , as Gabe Newell once said, but it still chafes. But sometimes a little extra development time can go a very long way. In a new interview with the NoClip podcast , immersive sim maestro Harvey Smith shared one such story about Deus Ex, explaining how it leveraged some extra post-production time to give a much bigger role to one of the game's most famous NPCs—and make it a much better game in the process... - Deus Ex: Human Revolution could've had a track from the original game's composer but it was rejected for not being the 'right fit,' and in hindsight he says they were right - 27 March 2026
Deus Ex is just so damn great . I know we say that a lot around here, but you can never say it enough, so I'm saying it again: Deus Ex is great . One of the greatest ever. And one of the most distinctive elements of that greatness is its soundtrack, which like the game itself is great . It's so core to the experience, in fact, that when Eidos Montreal dropped the 2010 teaser telling the world that Deus Ex was back, it included the unforgettable opening bars of the Deus Ex theme song... - It's brutal out there: Deus Ex and Unreal composer says he's submitted 50 resumes and gotten one interview in the last year - 26 March 2026
If you don't pay close attention to game credits you may not know the name Alexander Brandon, but you've almost certainly heard his work. The composer of Deus Ex's soundtrack has some 30 years of games to his name as a musician (Unreal, Stormgate), audio director (Wasteland 3, Neverwinter Nights 2), and even voice actor—who could forget his performances as "Flayed Goat" in Pagan Online or "Additional Mudokon Voices" in Oddworld: Soulstorm?.. - Deus Ex's art director says ugly new remaster "did not need to happen" - 31 October 2025
Deus Ex is one of those series that would break the internet should a new entry ever get revealed. It sounds like we came close, but Embracer reportedly scrapped a new Deus Ex back in 2024 before it even entered full production. The original paved the way for so many of the brilliant immersive sims and stealthy shooters that followed, and there's a desire for more from that universe. Knowing this, a modernized version of the 2000 classic would seem a reliable money-spinner - enter the folks at Aspyr, who know a thing or two about remastering some of the best old games . However, when Deus Ex Remastered was revealed back in September, the reception wasn't as warm as it would've hoped - it's been largely slammed by fans. Now, Deus Ex's art director has had his say - and he's not that impressed either. Read the rest of the story... RELATED LINKS: The best old games to play 2025 Deus Ex jus…
- Deus Ex's influence on Elon Musk 'may be its longest, worst legacy,' says its writer - 5 September 2025
Elon Musk thinks Deus Ex is " one of the best games ever ". It's not exactly a hot take. But his taste in games also displays an impressive lack of self-awareness. Musk sees himself as an outsider and heroic figure taking on the status quo, despite being the world's richest man, the owner of X, and a sometimes-ally of Donald Trump... Read more.
- You can thank John Romero's hard-partying ways for the suits giving Deus Ex the extra dev time it needed: 'These British guys would just get hammered with the Dallas team for three days straight' - 9 July 2025
PC Gamer recently dispatched Robert Zak to chat with the senior developers behind Deus Ex, in order to mark the 25th anniversary of a true classic. Among the many nuggets are that the initial pitch for the game starred Jake Shooter , supercop, and that the team never really thought that one of the most political games you could imagine was political at all ... - Warren Spector was so desperate to make Deus Ex that it almost became a Command & Conquer RPG: 'I was going to find a way to make it one way or another, even if it meant making another damn sci-fi game!' - 6 July 2025
Deus Ex recently celebrated its 25 th birthday. But in a parallel universe, PC gamers with eight arms and two heads are commemorating the 25 th anniversary of a first-person Command & Conquer game to blow C&C Renegade out of the water. That's because Warren Spector's platonic ideal of the immersive sim very nearly became part of Westwood's beloved strategy universe, so desperate was the legendary designer to realise his vision... - Deus Ex devs say they weren't trying to make a statement when they made one of the most political games of all time: 'What I think is the right future for humanity is irrelevant. It's all about what each player thinks' - 2 July 2025
Deus Ex marks one of the first times I realised videogames could be about things, man . That conversation between the two NSF troopers on Liberty Island—where they discuss the reduction of people to version numbers and functionality—was a real eye-opener for a young Josh who had previously only played Rayman and Quake 2... - The game that would become Deus Ex originally starred Jake Shooter, supercop - 2 July 2025
Deux Ex is the PC classic we all love to bang on about: the FPS that arguably created the immersive sim, releasing players from the shackles of linear corridors and mindless baddies into a world where freedom of approach was the secret sauce. Its plot and stylings were also sophisticated for the time, with the player a blank slate in a world full of grey areas and ethically dubious choices... Read more.
- Deus Ex was a hard sell because, among other things, the Thief devs thought 'if you give players a gun, they won't sneak' - 1 July 2025

- Deus Ex lead Warren Spector pops up to remind everyone he didn't make the game alone in a cave, wish you a happy 25th anniversary, and get me wondering if something Deus Ex-related is happening behind the scenes - 27 June 2025
The man forever fated to be known as the creator of Deus Ex would like you to know that he did not, in fact, create Deus Ex. Not single-handedly, anyway. In a video marking the 25th (oh my god) anniversary of the first Deus Ex, Warren Spector emerged from his hermitage to wish everyone a very merry what a shame ... Read more.
- Deus Ex just got a huge, unofficial remaster thanks to transformative new mod - 12 June 2025
I love Deus Ex . I love the way it looks, how it plays, the music, the writing. Even its 'imperfections' make it better - JC Denton's stiff facial expressions, the bizarrely-behaving NPCs, and the reading-from-the-page voice acting are all part of the essential Deus Ex aesthetic. Now, 25 years later, the single most brilliant PC game of all time (sorry Doom, sorry Fallout, sorry Command and Conquer) has just gotten better. A transformational new mod expands and overhauls Ion Storm's sci-fi RPG masterwork with fresh mechanics, revised systems, more difficulty options, high-definition visuals, and more-detailed environments. Although it's completely unofficial, this feels like a Deus Ex remaster. Read the rest of the story... - Deus Ex may be the greatest PC game of all time, and now you can own it for free - 24 January 2025
If I had to pick the five greatest and most PC influential games, at least during that transformative decade between 1990 and the end of 2000, then I think Fallout would make the list, probably Civilization, and maybe Doom. There are a lot of contenders for the fourth spot. Command and Conquer comes to mind. So do Half-Life, Counter-Strike, The Sims, and StarCraft. But the ultimate crown goes to Deus Ex . Visionary, original, and the perfect intermediary between player and developer, they should give out Deus Ex to everyone who owns a PC. It's required reading. We're not quite there yet - but if you're signed up to Prime Gaming, or want to give it a try, Deus Ex is free to keep. Read the rest of the story... - Deus Ex writer reveals canceled sequel that linked Mankind Divided to DX1 - 9 January 2025
There are lots of contenders - Command and Conquer, Fallout, Doom - but on balance, I'm certain that the original Deus Ex is the greatest PC game of all time. Sadly, however, the Deus Ex prequels, Human Revolution and Mankind Divided, never caught up to the plot of DX1 - as of 2024, the series' owner Embracer seems to have resigned Deus Ex to the shelf, after laying off almost 100 staff at developer Eidos. But that's not the end of the story. One Deus Ex writer, whose credits also include Watch Dogs Legion, now shares details on the Mankind Divided sequel that never was. Read the rest of the story... You can't have a chat with Warren Spector and not ask him about Deus Ex. Sure, it's almost a quarter of a century old, but it feels pretty relevant today. And, crucially, it's still an impressive game—albeit a bit long in the tooth. So of course our itinerant interviewer Jeremy Peel had to raise the subject during a conversation that you'll see more of next month... Read more.

Some games are essential parts of the PC gaming canon.
